M1 Reviews
J
Beautiful appearance. I love the pie charts. I would give it a 5 star except, the mobile app needs some work. Every time you go to the news articles in the app and then press back. You have to sign back on, ALL the time. It would be nice to have it set up to give you a time out warning. The moving of stocks around to other pies or just simply organizing all your pies is a pain in the neck, in the desk top and mobile app. It take some work and YouTube to figure out how to move things around without causing a tax event. A simple drag and drop into and out of pies would be an amazing tool, especially for beginner investors.

I was looking for a platform to automate my financial life. I found M1 and couldn't be happier! Investment, checking, and credit all in one package. Managing my money used to be so time consuming. Now I just let the rules I setup do everything for me. I can now spend those mental calories on other tasks and my money takes care of itself. It's perfect. The credit card is awesome! The borrow feature let's you be your own banker in literally seconds. 100% recommend if you want simplicity and automation for your finances.
B
I love this setup, it could be as good as betterment. However, their recurring transactions for automated investing leaves something to be desired. For that, I'm taking off one star. When seeing up a recurring transaction you can't see the scheduled dates, and it uses a "this week" or "next week" system. I'd like to just put in a start date, the amount I want to invest into my pie and then see the schedule for all my dates for the current year. Most brokers have a feature like this.
T
I must say the platform, customer support and over ease of use is ideal for any beginner. I am impressed with the customer support on my issues and questions and response time. Great fractional share investing platform.
S
M1 Finance is AWESOME! Super easy to use and navigate around. I've used many different platforms and I honestly have to say that M1 finance is one of the best out there!
P
Two stars for the effort. They just didn't satisfy my needs as they suggested. I actually thought they'd be better (as in unique). Now I cannot delete the account, and I get emails as if I still was doing business with them.
C
I want to cancel the membership trial that I was "tricked" into clicking on. The instructions on how to do this are incorrect and there is no Manage Billing in the pages that I can find. There is no help. There is only a robot. This makes me think that this is a very bad sign about even starting with this company. ( If 1 = poor)
C
The use friendliness of this program is amazing. You go in, take care of what you need to and DONE! When you consider how much of your hard earned money goes toward a financial advisor, this is a great option. Very excited to have found this.

So far so good.....With a very negative market now, I am holding just fine, and the less I tinker with a good thing, and let it run, the better off I am....I like the opportunity to give ETFs in the international market, emerging markets a good source of balancing the portfolio. It takes a bit of focus to understand M1, but the more I see and get used to it, all becomes much easier.....
K
i love the fact that you can buy fraction shares. but the down side of this is only 2 trade a day with M1 plus and we can't control the time and price of purchase.
M
The worst brokerage I have ever dealt with. User Interface is very dumbed down, I can login but cannot see my account number, is it open or not? Submitted my account transfer form but received no confirmation or tracking of it, constant emails of their M1 Plus useless features. Also, M1 has the highest account transfer out fees in the industry. Run away from M1.
E
I love M1 Finance for long term investments there is nothing better! Low fees, plenty of diversification with their ETFs. I chose them because they have Paul Merryman's diversification and that cannot be beat!
A
This brokerage has ads for their credit cards and crypto all over the site, I'm going to a more ethical firm
D
Simple and easy to use. If you love buying stocks and holding to build dividend income M1 is the way to go.
J
M1 is great. It allows you to have all the stocks you want even if you don't have alot of money. Website and APP work great.
W
Love it! Love it! and Love it! M1 A+ simple tools and resources for us the smart investor.
S
Awful service, after multiple months they were unable to ever set up my account properly for trading but did hit me for a $30 charge without doing anything or facilitating even the transfer of my initial finding. STAY AWAY!!!!!
R
I am a long term investor. M1 has been a very good platform so far, with no fee or charges of any kind.
M
performance getting degraded day-by-day. Platform is not very user friendly. Auto invest requires NEW CASH Money, you can't use existing CASH sitting in account to setup for select $ amount trades. Thinking to switch to other

I've tried a lot of brokers and this is the absolute worst. The controls, though they allegedly were designed for newbies to stock trading, are not intuitive. Their "pie" gimmick is the opposite of useful. The worst part, though, is the lack of choices when trading. There's no way to put a trailing stop on your positions, which means having to watch stocks regularly and rush to sell if it hits your chosen low mark. Since I am often away from the internet in my travels, I usually miss such signals and, subsequently, lose more money than I necessary when a stock drops too much. You also can't set a sell limit to just let it automatically sell at a certain price. Even the way they have the "sell" function set up doesn't make sense. Instead of entering the number of shares you want to sell, it requires you put in a dollar amount. Since stock prices are constantly in flux, how do you know if all your shares will sell? I don't get it. If I didn't have some stocks doing well and didn't mind paying enormous transfer fees, I'd close this account. As it is, I am stuck with it for a while. If you are looking for somewhere to trade, do yourself a favor and go to Schwab. They have new lower rates so, unlike in the past, it is now cost-effective to use their service. Update: March 2022... Had a stock plummeting for months and could never figure out how to sell or put a sell limit on it. Value is now zero!!! This site should be avoided at all costs!
j
Amazing App! Better than the competition. This app has everything I was looking for in an online brokerage. Easy to use but with very useful features. The user interfaces is very clean. Opening an account and funding the account was a very fast and easy process. This app is a must have for those that want to invest in their future. Finding and Investing in stocks and funds is very easy.

I wanted to like M1. They have an auto-invest feature that is turned on by default before you build your "pie." I wanted to have this turned off, instead. With the pie still not built, the web app does not show the option to turn off auto-invest. At least not anywhere that their help docs show it should be or that their support says it should be. 2 weeks in, this is not fixed and their support is responding in a very bot like repetitive fashion, not even paying attention to the actual screenshots sent showing the UI does not have the pieces they insist should exist. (I expect that it would had I already built a pie and had that invested - but it just does not show in this early setup flow.) At this point, the auto-invest is not the point. The poor support experience is. I had a phone call scheduled this morning, which they insisted would help even though it would just be walking me through the help page I linked to their support (they did not think to link it to me) and they did not show. My general feeling is that, if they are going to be this bad at support now, on something so basic, imagine what it will be like when real money is tied up and anything significant goes wonky. Nice concept - including some of the plus features that stand out. Terrible support.
S
The ability to create stocks and ETF fractional investments in varying percent allocations is a rare financial tool for investors
J
I love M1 Finance's platform. I don't like the idea of having to allocate my own money every time I add into my investments. I want to be able to set up automatic transfers to my investments, and have them get invested. M1 Finance has done a great job at that. Love it!
N
I love the app and the ease of investing through fractional shares. I like the rate of return I get with my checking account and the ability to borrower against my investment account at a super low rate. The customer service when needing to speak to a representative however leaves much to be desired! There is no representatives available after hours nor is anyone available on the weekends. I just sat on hold trying to reach an agent for over 15 minutes and ended up having to request a callback. The other thing I don't care for is that you cant do a wire transfer from your spend checking account. You can only do a wire from your investment account. Which means you would have to sell some of your positions.
P
At first we where not to sheer we started with $400 2/9/22 by 5/24/22 $737.15 that's purity good to us we where referred by Ron Yates Thanks Pauline

Highlights: Amazing concept within an utterly confusing and user-unfriendly app, and an equally user-unfriendly desktop site. Also, customer service is not available when you urgently need it. Update several days later: I still haven't heard back from customer support. Closing out my account completely as we speak. Not worth the confusion and headache. Details: I am not unfamiliar with investing or using investing apps at all. I am a tech savvy millennial, and have existing accounts with two other firms that I have been using for years. I was super excited to switch to M1 because of the automations available and the concept of grouping my investments into pies. Before moving my whole portfolio over, however, I decided to try out the app with a relatively small amount of money. Somehow during that small trial, the app managed to schedule three identical transfers from my bank instead of just one. It was also set by default to instantly invest that money into one of the pies I created - something that took me by surprise. Then it wouldn't let me transfer any of the accidentally transferred money back to my bank without waiting 5 business days... right before tax day, my credit card bill, and the automatic payment for my mortgage! Customer service exists at M1 according to its website, but it amounts to "getting a call" on some unknown day at some unknown time. Then there are the pies, which are designed to make it simple to group your investments according to your goals. I think the pie idea is conceptually incredible, like I said earlier. However, it's not clear where to find the pies once you've created them. After half an hour of clicking around, I've managed to find just two of the pies I made. However, they've migrated to some other bizarre category that I don't understand. The other pies, well... they've just disappeared. I want to love M1, and I'll be on the lookout for positive changes to its user experience. In the future, I want to know exactly where my pies are, exactly where my money is, and to be able to distribute it as I see fit without surprises or accidental transfers. At that point, I am still willing to consider moving my other investments over to this platform. Until then, I'm leaving my money where it is.
G
M1 Finance has a great product that fits long term investors. However, their customer service is by far worst out of any bank I've worked with. They try to upsell you but don't try to retain you by providing extremely poor customer experience.
M
I am new to the stock market and have a lot to learn. M1 makes it easy for me to navigate the market and make investments. Excellent App!
A
Love this platform. It is truly an all-in-one platform. Would love to see crypto become integrated
T
A few years ago I stumbled on M1 and invested a small amount. They offer a comprehensive website that is easy to use and easy to understand. The cherry on top is the out of this world customer service. I use their credit card that offers excellent cash back and they allow you to borrow at a very low rate. I have now invested a much larger amount with them, they have earned my trust and business. Check them out, definitely worth a long look.

As someone who is blind, I was initially concerned that I wouldn't be able to make use of M1 Finance, but I was able to sign up without any initial deposit or obligation, and found that I was able to create a portfolio that I wanted. Some items aren't the easiest things to use with a screen reader, but they work well enough, and I love the balance between an automated investing approach, and one you can do yourself. So far, this is a great platform, and unlike others, it's not only free, but has a small minimum deposit, which makes it more attractive for me, being in a low income situation. I've been investing and experimenting for a bit over a week now, and so far, I've been enjoying it greatly. This is a fantastic platform, and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone seeking to invest money for themselves.
A
M1 Finance is a great way to place your investing on autopilot, with automatic monthly transfers schedule from my checking account to my M1 account, I have continued to watch my account build value. Moreover, the app allows anyone to establish a portfolio that is well diversified, while also providing the account holder to rebalance the portfolio by literally touching one button. Success is made easy!
M
The inability to edit portfolio with buys without having to readjust percentages ruined it for me. Sure it's great for building your own mutual fund in a sense. But when you want to make a deposit and say buy $500 of a set stock or group of stocks editing your portfolio becomes very difficult. I still like this for passive investing and other things. But the tools for buying selling and editing accounts/portfolios without selling off securities as you adjust percentages is really poorly put together.
We agree there's room to improve when it comes to editing Pies. We're currently hiring more team members to help us tackle projects like these, and appreciate your patience as we work to improve our platform. In the meantime, we invite you to join our new research program, which will help us plan improvements to M1, test new features, and collect feedback. You can learn more and sign up at bit.ly/m1-research-program.
D
A good platform to manage my own portfolio for long term investment. Would be great if they would add the ability to connect more than one external account to their Spend checking account to facilitate accumulation of investments from multiple sources.
T
Easy to use platform and I like the pie concept however I wish there was a Dividend Reinvestment Program (DRIP) option. When I deposit money I like it being distributed via the pie but I like dividends to stay with the company.
J
Not intuitive, tutorials not helpful to me, had to go to an outside source to learn how to even make my first pie. I should not need to go to google to learn how to use a platform. Suggest updating and creating a video on site that actually walks you through how to use the platform correctly as it would greatly cut down on customer frustration. Also suggest adding a link to pie creation under the portfolio tab instead of just research. This would be greatly helpful for individuals who are new to investing and are a bit old for technology. : )
S
I opened an account with this company. I tried to move a couple of stocks from another company to fund my account. They wanted a full statement of all my investments before they did it. I did not feel they had the right to know all of my personal business. They then sent emails saying they would get the 2 stocks. After almost a week of this I am giving up. I hope everyone knows that nobody is charging fees anymore and you can go to a real brokerage and get real service for the same amount. ZERO!
J
A great program however does not offer a DRIP option. M1 is more for the "set it, forget it " Type of investor. However they do have a feature that I liked a lot and that is the "expert Pies" that you can invest in. A "pie" is a bunch of stocks or EFT's that are "slices" and depending in what you want, different "slices" are put together to make a whole "pie". You can make your own or go with their pre-made pies. A good service, but missing the DRIP option, which I need.
P
Have been using M1 for a few months and seems like a great easy to use and understand platform for building wealth and great as an introduction to the stock market. The only slight concern I have is that as soon as I started my account I started getting messages from M1 about the ability to get a loan with my portfolio as collateral. I have have many many brokerage accounts throughout the years and that is the only time one has said here you can take a loan out now. Just a little concerning, but then again other brokerages give you margin to day trade even if you have bad credit, so is it that much worse? I guess only time will tell.
C
TL;DR If you like beta platforms, do it. If not, move on. It's your money. M1 is not ready for prime time. Not even close. This sounded like a smooth, easy way to buy fractional shares with no hassles. Wrong. The fractional shares part is true. Don't believe the rest. I applied for a trust account. That took three weeks of back and forth. I tried to connect my bank to it. That didn't work. I tried to move money between my M1 accounts. Turns out you need a "Save" account to do that. How did I learn that? I googled it. Why did I do that? Because it is nowhere to be found on their website. Then it turns out there is a six day hold on new deposits. That was unwelcome news to me. Why? Because that is also no where to be found on their website. One month later, I still do not have my money in the account where I want it to go. Maybe five more days, they say, then I can call them back and they can do it for me because I can't do it online, it seems. Can I just withdraw my money? Sure! That will be six business days. Yes, I am for real. Their chat support is a bot. Don't bother. It is geared for morons who cannot read a webpage. Email support is useless. When they say one business day response, the don't mean within one business day. They mean after one business day. Ask today, hear back tomorrow. Respond tomorrow, hear back the day after. If you decide not to listen to me and sign up for this anyway, if you need help save yourself much grief and just call them. Where to find the number? Best to google it. Phone support is nice but they can't actually do much for you. Why? Because M1 is just a skin on someone else's clearing platform. They don't control it and you cannot talk to the people who do. They are a middleman and you can tell. M1 is, at best, a platform for newbies or super-small time investors who don't expect much and don't have much on the line. Even then, there are better choices for fractional shares. Where do you find them? Google it. My advice? If you care about service, stick with Schwab or Fidelity, who have been good at this forever. M1 has a long, looooong way to go. It's not worth waiting for.
K
Makes it super easy to manage your portfolio because it does it for you. You just set it up and let it go. It's easy to see the unrealized gains and the performance of each holding and the full portfolio. No fees, no day trading. This is the place to be a long-term buy and holder.
M
So far not impressed by their interface. I just want to invest in a particular stock, but they have this slices thing that is a pain to deal with. I've tried and tried to add or remove stocks from a list they call my "portfolio" but after adding some I wanted to track the first day, I am unable to edit it. Just let me enter a symbol, research it, and either move on or click buy. Trying to make it cute they made it difficult to work with.
M
My biggest logistical problem with M1 is that you only have two trading windows a day. While I understand that it’s passive investing app, I still expected some flexibility in when I could trade. Instead, the trading happens seemingly randomly. One day, I use the morning window at 10am and it goes through at 10:20. The next day, I do the same thing and it goes through at 11:30. When prices are fluctuating in a volatile market, that lack of controls can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars. For this reason, I deduct one and half stars. My biggest problem overall, however, is that I think the marketing of M1 for their premium membership was deceiving, at least from my perspective. When I bought the premium membership it was so that I could trade during both windows in one day. I attempted to buy stocks in the afternoon after buying in the morning, and it gave me the option to buy the premium account if I wanted to make the afternoon trades. It was an advantageous opportunity for buying. I figured I would mitigate the cost of membership with the gains I made from the trade. After purchasing it, however, it then proceed to not let me make the trades. The reason was that I didn’t have $25,000 in my account. It was aggravating to say the least to purchase a service for a particular, advertised reason, and then have it not provide that service for a non-disclosed reason.
A
Overall I like M1. I wish they would add a few more features for the pies like sector, type and be able to move stock from pies to stand alone and vice versa... that would be really cool
B
I can't start a portfolio. How to do it? It is impossible. I can't edit my pie percentages on Web or on my Cell. Nothing works. I'm tired of this. I can't even get started. If I don't figure this out soon, I'll quit and try some other way. 3-9-21 Well, finally M1 does work. The trouble was getting setup. After I funded the account, everything was easy! Now I like it fine. I'll remove one star for my hard beginning experience.
A
I really, REALLY like the site/company - especially it's structure and investment options. HOWEVER... They do not offer any kind of an actual savings, or money market account. On the "spend", ( aka : checking ), account there is no "joint" options for married folks. Also, there is no true beneficiary option for this account, either. In addition to this, the "annual fee" for the "premium service" is $125.00. I'm sorry, but that is just OUTRAGEOUS - especially in these times, and for the few "perks" that it is actually offering. M1 could be SOoooo much better than it actually is.
I
Great interface- Worst customer service, worst user experience, worst time trying to get money out of the app.. only use this app if you have money you don't want to touch.
M
Absolutely the best! Especially if stocks and investing is new to you. This is an excellent platform to learn from and even for the novice its great, simple, and informative as you expect one to be. IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE OVER COMPLICATING OR FEARFUL TO LOOK AT!! GO ""M1FINANCE"" A+++++
S
M1 Finance is great for new and seasoned investors alike. It is so easy to use once you get the hang of it. I like their fractional shares and reinvestment of dividends and many more ... And did I mention all for Free. Who doesn't like apple "Pies"?
S
This is a great tool to use. I have enjoyed it. There are two items that need to be addressed with the programmers. First, is the fact that it is not very easy to move slices into other pies (or more specifically, equities into another slice). There really should be a “drag and drop” feature. You should not have to sell and buy equal parts of an equity, nor should you have to call M1 Finance customer support to make that transaction. Second it would be nice if there was a “auto invest feature” that allowed you to keep a certain percentage, %, in cash rather than a $ amount (yes you can calculate that on your own). This is great for customers wishing to have a cushion of cash to automatically keep as purchasing power during corrections. Additionally, with that, it would be beneficial if there was an “auto invest above $X.XX amount above cash value” attached to that. This would be beneficial with regards to avoiding “excluded buys”. If you have a portfolio with 5 or 6 slices, with each slice containing many equities, and the user has “auto invest” turned on with M1’s current algorithm you will find that many times there are excluded buys that can’t be avoided and are never purchased even after many weeks of “auto invest” turned on. Having a large “minimum auto invest” dollar value selected will allow M1’s algorithm to accurately execute the dynamic rebalancing feature in a slice that is highly divided. For example, with a $10,000 cash + equity account it would read….“Auto Invest” -- “Auto-Invest ON” – “Minimum Portfolio Dedicated to Cash = 15% = $1,500” – “Minimum $200.00 Auto Invest”. The $200 could be user variable. With this methodology, auto-invest would execute only when there is $200 greater than the 15% cash mark; i.e. meaning that the auto-invest algorithm will only execute $200 buys at a time only (in increments of $200 dollars or greater) when 15% cash has been achieved. In the past this was not an issue, when the minimum buy was $0.01. Now that M1’s minimum buy is $1.00 there is much more of a likelihood of excluded buys over-and-over-and-over of the same equity. The only way to avoid this is to manually purchase the equity in the slice, but this defeats M1’s intended dynamic rebalancing benefit.
D
Love M1 Finance! I've been an investor for a while now and their automated target investing for individual stocks make its DEAD SIMPLE to have a well diversified, single stock portfolio. Give it a try!!
V
There is a $100 fee for transferring your securities to another brokerage account. This fee is exorbitant and underhanded. The decent thing to do would be to have a warning and check box to acknowledge the fee when you place the transfer order. Instead, they simply liquidate your other securities to cover the fee without warning if you don't have cash in the account to cover it. No house call. No warning. Their only defense is that this fee is described in the all the fine print agreements when you register your account. Forgive me, but I find that pretty sleezy! An honest company would take measures to help their clients avoid unnecessary fees. This is very poor form.
P
Super useful app. I find it much easier to invest freely with my more modest capital thanks to the fractional stock purchases. M1 maintains my pie chart while I choose the stocks and balance I like. Have yet to run into any bugs and the one small problem I had with my card was fixed immediately by the help team!
R
I have been using M1 Finance for a little over a month now. I have to say I am really impressed. The fact that you are able to buy partial shares is just mind blowing. I am using it for longer term(investment) holdings. This is not something that would work for day trading. This is not a problem for me since I have another account I use for day trading. So give it a try as you will not be disappointed.
S
Amazing. You can have a diversified portfolio with $100. This is something you can't get with a standard brokerage account. M1 is just awesome, it gives the opportunity to everyone to start a real market account with whatever you can afford. Trades are FREE, even the best prices are about $5 a buy and sell, so this allows you to learn with REAL money. The only drawback.....you can only buy & sell at 9am central standard time, this means you can't sell when there is a 3pm run on your stock of choice, but this is a small price to pay for free trades and a fully diversified portfolio with fractional shares. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
T
If I could, I would give negative stars. M1 has a great premise and a great app and website, all very user friendly and modern looking. The worst part of M1 is their customer service. I have asked the customer service's help to create another account to have a different pie of investments and after following the instructions of their customer service, the new investment pie I created was just a mirror of my original one - totally defeating the purpose of having two separate investing accounts. Then, I have been trying to reach out their customer service for over 3 weeks now, I send them weekly emails with screenshots and I also call them on the phone, only to have my call disconnected after 15 min of waiting. HORRIBLE customer service.
Z
Signed up and paid for M1 plus, but still cannot access the afternoon trade window. Will change this review once support gets back to me. Logged a ticket 2 days ago. Will update in real-time. 3 months... no support follow up. Still can't access M1 plus trading window. The overall M1 service is really only good for niche use cases. Their pie model will penalize your performers if you DCA. Too many workarounds if you want to add new pies and fund that pie separately. Service could be way more valuable. Missing some key components. Not able to be your daily driver.
T
Since sadly Motif investing is closing M1 appears to be a decent alternative. I opened a brokerage account. The first issue I had was I was unable to keep a balance in the brokerage account. Money gets immediately invested. So you cannot keep a balance and have weekly investments made. you have to actually make weekly deposits from your bank into brokerage. This does not work for me. So I opened their Spend checking account. Thinking I could keep a balance there and then transfer regular in to the brokerage account. I obtained the plus membership because due to some perks. I initiated my monthly deposits. 3 business days go by no transfer. I contact CS and they ask me to upload my bank details via a non secured portal. There was no instruction to do so prior. If I did not place a query nothing would have happened. I am also unable to upload within my account. I am currently looking for other options similar to Motif. I might have to just see how Folio works out (where my motif will currently automatically transfer too).
J
Very difficult to communicate with this company. I could not get through to a customer service representative to talk on the phone. Over email I received choppy communication with conflicting messages and had a very stressful time trying to manage my situation. The customer service needs to be improved. I transferred my account. I received a partial transfer due to several of my stocks not being traded by M1. Additionally the margin balance at my old account was greater than what M1 allows. This means that they took the transfer and immediately placed me in a margin call for a balance that would have been fine in my previous account. I am unhappy with this brokerage. I will edit this review if I receive a response and my problem is addressed. So far the customer service has been very difficult to deal with.
Hey Joseph, we're sorry to hear you've had trouble reaching our support team. We'd love to learn more about your situation. You can reach us at [email protected].

I've been using M1 for 6 months now and while I really like some aspects of this investment tool, it is seriously lacking in others that are making me think twice about keeping my money in here. The research tool is great and enables you to research by market cap, PE, Dividend, industry, sector, and lets you sort them. However, I wish this could go more in depth to include more specifics like balance sheets, cash flow and income statements. Their charts are OK and tell you when dividends have been paid back to 5 years. You cannot use them for much more than that. I love the ability to make "Pies", It's like making your own little ETF. and it tells you the dividend and avg return yield which was very insightful. You can make multiple investment accounts. MY BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH M1 is that they only allow for one investment window. WHY?? I truly do not understand why this is and it's my least favorite feature of M1. I sold my position at this time and at this price, it should not be my problem that it takes you a while to perform this action. ALSO it's important to note that when you go to sell your stock/investment you will not get the price at the time you sold it. It will all depend on when your transaction goes through. I've definitely lost out on money here. Lastly, there is not option for options trading. This site is for the low and slow investor. I am a little more hands on with my investing style and will hold positions anywhere from 1 day to multiple years. It's a great tool and I will continue using it for an IRA and positions I plan to hold for 1 year or more but I plan to eventually leave if some of the above is not fixed. There is also no way to receive notification on stocks you are invested in. I wish there was a way where I can be told when my investments are reporting earnings or have important news articles which I should pay attention to. Anyways, take this for what it is!
M
Really like M1 with the only exception of M1 Spend or M1+, whatever they call it. If every other broker out there can offer those same benefits for free why should I pay M1+ for the 'privilege' of doing the same thing? Doesn't make sense. As soon as M1 can offer the M1+/Spend benefits for no annual fee, I'll move my direct deposit, Visa charge, debit. checking/savings and everything else over to them.

The most frustrating investment experience! You have to make deposits in $10 increments, which is fine, but they don't invest dollar amounts, they invest percentages of your "pie." That means you could deposit $100, and after the system invests your money (despite telling it to invest the full amount), you'll be left with, say, $1.50 in your account that just sits there. Deposit more money and you'll be left with another fraction of your deposit. You can't deposit just enough to evenly distribute a small amount across all your stocks because it only invests in $25 increments, regardless of the $10 deposit minimum. Can you just send the $1.50 back to your bank? No, because they have withdrawal minimums too. So you would have to turn off auto-invest, deposit enough money to meet the minimum, and then you can withdraw. But you'll be back in the same boat the next time you want to invest. I suspect that they make interest off these dollars and cents left over in everyone's accounts. Good for them, but I want all of my money working for me, not anyone else. You're better off using that $1 or so for a monthly subscription to Stash, where you can invest however much you want, even a few cents. Besides this, you will get a ream of paper in the mail each month summarizing your account, not to mention envelopes full of notices about individual stocks. This, despite having signed up as "paperless." I closed my account, but then a dividend came in afterward for a few cents. So my account status is "closed" but I still get the reams of paper in the mail and there's nothing I can do because they won't transfer a few cents to my bank and I would have to reopen my account and set up my bank again to deposit more money to then withdraw and THEN finally close my account. They're a headache and they know it.

Decent platform for investing as it automates a lot of stuff but there are many gaps. (1) Trading window should not be limited to 2 times a day. (2) The numbers which show the growth of a portfolio are misleading. They should be more readable and sometimes show way higher appreciation than what the portfolio actually earned. The numbers doesn't seem to give the real picture easily.

I opened an investment account then decided to try out the spend account. Failed for no reason. Reached out to support and they said my account was rather new and should be able to open the spend account 7 days later. So I waited. Then I got a different error: "Your application has been denied. If you believe this is an error, please contact our support team." Ok, so I contacted their support team again because I do believe this is an error. However, the support team refused to explain to me why and I wasted my time opening M1 account completely. Very frustrating experience and would never recommend such a platform with horribly irresponsible support team.
m
HIGHLY annoying and constant Capatcha challenges just to get into your own account. Very frustrating and they do nothing but tell you to use Chrome browser. Well some of us use a private browser instead. Can't even leave this horrible service without paying $100s in exit fees. Avoid.
M
Tried to set up account for my elderly father. There is no way to name beneficiaries or to add me to the account. I canceled the transfer and so fortunately no money changed hands but now I cannot close the account. There is no way to talk to anyone to close the account. Very unsatisfactory experience. This is a terrible user interface. I have used Schwab, Fidelity and Bettterment as well as several accounts at Chase. I know how to do things online. This interface is impossible.
A
Great Bank and Investment Portfolio! Customer Service is there to help and actually cares about helping their customers! Terrific experience, keep up the good work!
T
M1 Finance gives me control of my investments. Especially like the fractional option for purchasing stocks. Fairly easy to walk through the many different options. Using their already made pies to invest. Short term, long term, dividend payments, education investments are among the many features to utilize.
2
Great concept poorly executed. Constant unexplained failures to add positions. Good for a handful of positions, not for seriously managing a portfolio.
p
A former user of the Ameritrade platform, I had been extremely disappointed with their high trading fees and eventually left them for greener pastures. Since trying M1 I was thoroughly impressed. While not having all the bells and whistles of other trading site, I have been extremely satisfied. I never used most of those extras anyway. A simple, easy to use and straight forward platform is all I need. Thanks M1.
D
Customer service is slow and does not respond to withdrawal actions nor do they provide a status update in a timely manner. I finally received a response after 14 days of waiting when their website clearly states 5-7 business days. It's easy to get your funds in but difficult to get your funds out and they also charge a $75 fee. Buyer beware!!!
T
Love the ability to autoinvest and set up your portfolio with ease. The ability to link the credit, checking, and investing all into one seamless platform is nice as well. The smart transfer Rules and makes it so Rewards from credit card can go into the investing portfolio, which can feed or be fed by the checking account, which can autopay the credit card balance all without me having to do a thing after it's set up.
B
Doesnot allow you to change scheduled investment amounts. Gives instructions to go to a non-existatnt tab. I guess the only way to fix things is to do withdrawls since there is no way to change monthly investment amounts. Web page is not user friendly based on the info there. Id give it a zero if I could!
M
I was charged for $125 but I didn't renew my membership. I tried to contact your support for a few times but no answers so far.
D
UPDATE: Still 1*. Also their platform is very buggy. Support not responsive. Idea is good, execution is bad. They will lend out your securities without telling you. Hard to gauge order exection. Overall UI is quite messy. And their "compliance group" creates tons of unnecessary complication. Others have noted that they often ask you for complete account statements and balances from accounts you link which NO OTHER BROKERAGE COMPANY ON EARTH does (huge invasion of privacy--and would you trust any modern internet company with your personal information???) Nice try but you are better off using a real broker.
K
I have been an M1 customer since July 2019. I started with $100 in a taxable account and have since built my portfolio to several thousand. M1 allows you to invest in almost any stock and fund traded in the US with no fees and commissions. Last year, I rolled over a 401k to an M1 IRA and the process was smooth. I had to reach out to customer support and they were really friendly and knowledgeable and helped me understand the process. With no fees, my IRA will have a larger balance at retirement than if I kept my money with the other broker. I would recommend M1 Finance to anyone who is interested in investing in the long run or saving for retirement.
P
Good to have the PIE. But the calculation of G/L seems very wrong and useless. (So called Money Weighted is not good to me, or at least giving people an option). The award to new Spending account comes very slow. (Not yet).
M
M1 allows the user "very limited investment flexibility". Cannot move money from one pie cash holding account to another pie. I am very dissatisfied with M1.
W
great app very immersive but they wont let me get the credit card right now which sucks id like to start building a credit rewards portfolio
N
I just started my first pie this year more I pay attention to what is in the pie, more fun I have with the investment. However without M1 app then I won't be able to do this easy task. Thank you, I enjoy it.
C
I do not recommend using M1 Finance if you want to use M1 Borrow. They changed the rules on me and forced a maintenance call on my account when their clearing partner randomly deemed my stock a "volatile symbol" with little to no warning and they gave me 2 business days to correct it which forced me to sell at a loss. They should not have allowed me to draw a balance on Borrow in the first place if this was the case.
D
By far one of the easiest apps to use for investing. The pie system, ability to buy fractional shares, and passive investing definitely make this my favorite investing app. M1 makes dollar cost averaging easy.
B
Latest experience involves trying to transfer an account into M1 from another brokerage account. After having seen no activity for 2 weeks, sent an inquiry and was told that the application had just been forwarded on, and that they needed additional information to set up the transfer account - which was already set up and was just awaiting the fund transfer. I like the concept, but am concerned that M1 has maybe grown just too fast. Their customer service is awful - if it is this bad transferring money in, can't imagine how painful it will be to take money out. UPDATE: Continue to like the product, but customer service continues to be horrible. The only way to contact is through e-mail, and CSR's obviously do not read/comprehend the question before answering i.e. I ask a question about the Spend Savings account and they respond with info on the M1 credit card. On my third time trying to rephrase the question so that they might actually read it, we'll see.
Hey Bill, we’re sorry to hear your experience hasn’t matched your expectations. We’d like to learn more about your situation -- please send us a note at [email protected].

M1 Finance in my opinion has the best interface on their website and app. Their portfolio system makes people with OCD when it comes to organization very happy. I do really like this app and plan to continue to use it. But here are a few issues. - The trade window, while I understand it reduces costs, really sets M1 back from other brokers who also have no fees but you can by anytime of the day which is very useful during times of volatility. This ultimately makes it difficult not to have another broker like Fidelity to but stocks short term. - Another issue I have is the lack of customer service, I know they are making steps to improve this, but the most fundamental thing people want is security with their money and until it's easy to chat with someone via the phone or online chat it has to be a knock against M1. - Moving positions between pies is difficult and should be much easier. Also M1+ isn't really worth it right now. Maybe if it was used to provide in depth research on companies and access to option trading it would, but right now it isn't worth it in my opinion. Anyways, I hope M1 takes the constructive criticism as that, because I'd love to keep using this app and just want to see it improve.
M
This is one of the best if not the best platform out there. My kids now can put their money in and do not have to worry about how many share they can buy in one company. Instead, they can have a hundred. For those out there who have problem transferring from another brokerage, I suggest you cash out first then put your money into M1. This is may be another way with less problem. I understand they don't have a very top service people to people. Hopefully with time, they will make more money to hire more professional people.
E
M1fiannce is the best tool I ever found to invest online. Very extensive, educative and user friendly. It allows me to control my investment portfolio and has been a blessing to me. I have always made money on this platform since I joined 2 years ago. I look to scale up for the long haul.
R
Great methodology and automation. But, all the good is erased with the worst possible customer service you can imagine. Transferring shares from another brokerage is next to impossible as they will send you automated emails to let them know when you're ready - you do that and will get the same email the next day, and the day after that, and so on. They also only respond to support emails MAYBE once every other day. They honestly don't even seem to care either. Their canned responses are ripped from FAQ's even if it doesn't address your issue or they will completely gloss over some questions entirely. I only once had an actual person respond to me - I was elated that I'd finally transfer my shares and gave them the information again... The next day, I get the same automated message as if I went back in time. Don't bother with this firm... Just go to JP Morgan, Fidelity, Etc. While it's such a promising platform, it just isn't worth it without half decent support or the ability to move funds efficiently.

I was in withdrawing an RMD for tax purposes and, since I rarely withdraw, needed assistance. When I called, the customer service person walked me through the steps and aided me in the steps as well as indicating the proper distribution type. He was professional, patient, and much appreciated. Any time I have needed assistance, i.e. transferring between accounts, M1 personnel have always been of valuable help.
L
This is the first long term investing app that I have used. It does everything that I would want it to. I can create my own pies and diversify how I want, whether it be focus on dividend earners or long term bonds. I can rearrange my pies and portfolio every day if I want to. They show what my pie looked like five years ago and how it would have grown if I'd invested in it 5 years ago. They also offer great expert pies which, in the last month that I've had the account, have grown the most. I do not think that I will use any other investing service.
W
Getting started was a little slow and the Pie's and their layers take a bit getting used. That is the reason I removed 1 star. Once you are in and figure it out, it is very powerful for buy and holders and long term investors! Hands down the best I have had so far. The auto re-investing and rebalancing works very well. This is not for day trading, this is for dividend re-investors and long term investors that want their account to work almost in automated fashion.
J
Great app for set it and forget it dividend investing. I would like to see M1 add the ability to easily move your stocks from pie to pie without the need to sell and buy which causes unnecessary taxable event. This is a much needed feature and I would make this a 5 star app.
C
The website layout and portfolio builder our outstanding. I really like how easy it was to build my own portfolio using the pie slices. Its like building your own ETF. I would like to see a dividend tracker added soon.
M
I'm writing this review as a Premium Customer. Customer support is virtually non-existent. I've had open requests for transfer of stocks for over a month, nothing happens. My M1 Trust account itself took over 1 month to open. Trades are slow, transfers into Spend account are slow. I'm overall dissatisfied so far.
C
Outside of actual investment part of functions, it has a very poor user interface design in laying out needed account setting function. No where to find (at least I tried very hard to find but still failed) option to stop paperless statement delivery settings. When issue raised to the support team (three times already), it kept revert it back as user issue without resolving the problem.
m
terrible at support I have some missing stock which I talked with support and it is almost more then 2 weeks and they are not able to resolve that issue.
J
My Gen has become real traders. Do to fee free apps like M1 (The best out of all of them). Thank you for welcoming us to the party by making your app so EZ to use.
K
I've been a client with M1 Finance for more than a year. I think this is a great company for any type of investor and especially for those like me who desire to invest in stock increments. So far, this company does as it advertises and is easy to interact with. I love the new site design. It's colorful, easy to read very well designed. Keep it up, M1 Finance.
S
M1 has a very slick interface and works flawlessly. I look forward to investing with them. The biggest issue I'm having at the moment is trying to find my referral link to send to my partner, but there are worst problems to have. We'll figure it out ;) Cheers and happy trading Tout Le Monde!
T
I love M1! Has the benefits of robo-investing without the account fees. Plus 3.5 % or 2% for margin loans!...I do have one recommendation to improve the platform, allow user to make limit and stop orders during the trade windows.
D
I think the interface could be improved a little. Also, there's no way of deleting an old account. I wish you can do this, but there is no feature to do so.
E
Great for long term beginning investors looking for auto investing and fractional shares. An important aspect to realize is that you will be limited in your flexibility to trade right when you like. However that enables the fractional shares and no fee investing. I would like to see a better research functionality to pick the new stocks or funds. I have to use other platforms for that. Happy investing!
c
ive been dealing with m1 finance over issues with transfers . Terrible. Been over a month and still never received my monies . app is great. internal affaires are needed to be polished up. one before this one was over 30 days until i called and was on hold forever, they did fix it. i do think appex has alot to do with it.
M
Overall fantastic robo-investing application. Love how easy it makes deposits and withdrawals while keep to your desired diversifications. My only feedback to make both the web portal and application more seamless is to not switch pages when jumping in/out of various slices. It would be great to see a drill down or collapse/expand structure implemented.
M
This was the first trading platform I ever used, and it was pretty early in the companies growth. I absolutely love it, and the updates that continue to come. I have tried three other popular trading platforms just to see if I was missing something. Each time, I came back to M1 because it is incredibly user friendly and fits my needs perfectly. As the company continues to grow, I will be a lifelong customer!
W
M1 Finance has a fairly user friendly platform but if you have questions and need to speak to company representative to assist you, you are on your own. There is no phone number to call and speak to a representative to discuss your questions or concerns. Your only option is to email the M1 Finance "customer service" representative and you will receive an automated response indicating they will follow up with you in one business day. However, my experience was that the person followed up with me close to a week later with a not clear response that left me having to email back to seek clarification. Perhaps other M1 Finance customers will not have questions about their account and therefore will not need to reach out to customer service. But, if you do need assistance beyond what you can do yourself online, please know that my experience on more than one occasion has been that the "customer service" aspect of this company is suboptimal. Many companies without brick and mortar locations aim to have excellent customer service, this is not one of those companies.
N
The biggest downfall to using this app, is you lose valuable buying/selling times with only 1 trading window a day. Even with the upgrade, you’re still at 2 trading windows a day and at the mercy of whenever the software buys/sells for you. This was a go to app for me as far as the fractional shares, IRAs and fees, but now competitive apps have implemented fractional shares, real time trading windows throughout the day, & auto buy/sell settings. I can’t see myself continuing to be with M1 finance if competitive apps open IRA accounts with the same fee structures and M1 finance doesn’t compete by better trade windows. I do like the interface with M1 compared to others but at the end of the day, I’m losing on my investments due to the trading window ordeal, and that’s frustrating.
S
For many years I wanted to trade in the stock market but was always afraid not only of being ripped off by brokers, but also the exorbitant fee they charged. M1 finance gives me confidence and even though I am still learning more about trading they make it so fun. So glad to find you!
S
So far, I love it. Easy to use. Easy to set up. Easy to read. You can invest as a part of a whole.... great to use and I look forward to using it for a while. Glad I found this option. I was tired of using things that would nickel and dime me before I even did anything. I find myself not wanting to even invest with my normal accounts even if I pay $9 a trade. I like that I can set up multiple accounts and have different portfolios with different break downs.
A
i love m1. they make it so simple to use and invest! I love the fractional shares so I can customize my pie and distribute my investments amongst all my securities. BUT one thing I think they should consider changing. I think the way they calculate returns should be changed. It's a money-weighted methodology and I think that it's just too complicated. I believe they should change this to just measuring the gains of the security in that day, to reflect your earnings.
S
My favorite brokerage out there. The market has many trading platforms out there but M1 is perfect for anyone looking to hold long term for dividends or a Roth. The M1 Spend (checking account) works great with the M1 Individual (Brokerage) for automation or staggered transfers. A solid product, 5 stars.
Thanks so much, Savanna! We're glad you're enjoying M1.
T
Always wanted to be able to invest in stocks on my own. The site is very informative and user friendly. It takes a little effort to figure out the different categories but it is well worth the effort if being an investor is your goal. Great for beginners or those with some knowledge of the stock market. Using the information provided will help you learn and grow.
J
This is a wonderful platform. Once you learn the ins and outs of investing and realize that day or swing trading is not viable for the average investor. M1 becomes your best friend. Its low cost platform allows you to build your portfolio with fractional and automatic investing. The borrow features and checking account features are amazing as well.
A
UPDATED REVIEW: New smart transfers truly make this the ultimate finance app/platform. Setting threshold numbers for moving money enables me to focus on what to invest and spend on, and not waste time on when and where to move money. Also, I LOVE borrowing at 2% interest. Absolutely incredible as a leveraging tool for investing or as a temporary emergency savings. ORIGINAL REVIEW: PHENOMENAL investing platform. Very flexible and powerful once you understand how to use it well. Customer service is very patient and knowledgeable.
Thanks so much for the kind words, Andrew! We're glad you're enjoying M1 (and our newest feature, Smart Transfers). Let us know if you're ever interested in participating in a client testimonial. We love to share client stories: [email protected].
F
Been ok for about two years. A real time tracker would be nice hence the four stars. Would be nice for us non-millionaires to be able to move money from different account internally once in a while but not have to give up 125.00 a year to do something we might only do 2 or 3 times a year. Otherwise it's still the best I've used so far.
B
The user interface and dashboard are very easy to navigate and the investment pies that are offered are a great bonus. The research is easy to understand and their support staff is great. M1 continues to broaden their product lines and they hit the mark. I prefer M1 to the other self-investment resources in the market today.
j
M1 Finance lets you manage your investments from a top down point of view. Best app for long term investors and for dividend investors. The only thing that keeps it from being a 5 star app, is how long it can take to fulfill orders, being that all orders are market orders. Unless you're doing some day or even swing trading, M1 Finance should be your go to!
A
Very good for people who like to hold their investments over the long term. No options or day trading, but it is an excellent broker for those who seek a long term investing experience, due to it's use of pie charts to easily and evenly distribute contributions.
D
Best way to get started investing. M1 keeps your investments on track using a percentage system (pie chart). I've expanded my investing portfolio but M1 got me started and I would highly recommend to anyone.
J
The best Long term investing platform there is! Easy to manage and love how they offer fractional shares. Building a dividend portfolio is easy. Also love how transfers from the bank to portfolio go in 1 business day (same day). Auto invest makes it simple to buy shares of stocks in your portfolio. Simply deposit and let the system do it self 💪🏽
E
M1 Finance is really good place for investing and making some money off dividend stocks. The app and desktop website work well and I've had no problems with them.
W
I love having everything readily available at my finger tips. Wish the system would improve to show beneficiaries listed under the account once assigned. This is something the developers should include to enhance. However, outside of that the app is extremely user friendly and easy!! Open additional trade windows please without having to upgrade!!
