Our local credit union was taken over by GRFCU recently. The local staff is amazing. However, since Great River has taken over, it's like jumping through corporate bank hoops. Ive been charged ATM fees (when using their ATM) since we signed up. They definitely ruined the "small town credit union" vibe. I'll be bank shopping soon. If I wanted to deal with people out of state for loans, I would've stuck with USAA.

Can you get the right number to fraud services? Every time my card gets flagged I have to play phone tag with the local branch and two 1 800 numbers an figure this out for myself. Unacceptable. Also when are you going to start incorporating crypto and paypal? Get with the times

    Response from the owner

Thank you for reaching out Aaron. We are sorry to hear you had a frustrating experience. Our team has made attempts to reach out and would like to discuss the “why’s” behind this interaction if you are open. As far as your comments about cryptocurrency & Paypal, our members should be able to attach Great River accounts to their Paypal account. If you are unable, please call a member of our team (320-252-5393) or use secure chat within Online Banking and they will be able to confirm all numbers are entered correctly. For cryptocurrency, we want to share that our Info Tech team watches updates to this currency security closely. At this time, Credit Unions are not receiving guidance from our regulators (NCUA) on how we are able to do this while ensuring safety and soundness for our members. The things you mentioned are important to us. We hope this helps and encourage you to message- [email protected] with a good contact number so a member of our team can call and discuss any further concerns. We want our members to feel well served and heard! Thank you again for bringing your concerns to our attention.

My daughter and I have had an accout. for 9 years and they have always treated us well. The children's program is really good for young ones to learn to save money.

    Response from the owner

Hi Ellen, Thank you for the 5-star review and taking the time to share about your experience. Your opinion really matters to us and we're happy to hear that you had such a great experience.

I have been with great river for 2 years this October. I started banking with them when I got an auto loan. For some reason that nobody can answer they put an additional insurance policy on my loan raising my payment about 130 a month. Nothing has changed on MY insurance policy that is well above what is required but yet they refuse to take off the insurance they have wrongfully added. This has been going on for moths with numerous people saying they will look into it and take care of it.

    Response from the owner

Thank you for reaching out Michael. We have looked into this and we are required by law to make sure all of the vehicles that have loans on to have full coverage during the life of the loan. Partial coverage is not enough. That is in the contract that all members sign. All lenders follow this regulation. Our sincerest apologies if there was any confusion on this!

I have been a credit union member for about four years now. It started with a home loan for which I was not the best qualified, but they worked with me and I have had the home since. Since that time, I have had glitches where I needed to move money to and from the credit union on a moments notice. While it required scrambling, they were able to make it happen within the same day. For me they represent what "banking" should be, caring, flexibility, reasonableness... because those decisions affect real people.

    Response from the owner

Thank you so much for your kind words Stephen! Please continue to reach out if and when you are in need. We so appreciate members like you.

I'd been a member of the credit union for 20 years and they closed my account out for inactivity with no notice and send the funds to the state of Texas. You'd think they would like to let you leave savings there and happily use it while accruing interest, but apparently that is not the case.

    Response from the owner

Hi Jonathan! Thank you for reaching out. We apologize, but do not have any records of this name and have very strict policies and procedures for contacting our inactive member accounts in numerous ways before any accounts would be closed. We take this serious and if you have a few free moments, could you please email [email protected] your contact information so we can have a Supervisor reach out and get more details to help you? Thank you in advance for your time.

This is the absolute worst bank you could bank with. Nobody knows what they are doing at the Sauk Rapids location. There overall customer service is horrendous. They only care about your money, not the customer

    Response from the owner

Hi Jaret! We are so sorry to hear this has been your experience at our Sauk Rapids location. That is not at all how we want our members to feel as they leave from any of our locations. If you are comfortable with talking to a Supervisor so we can get more specifics on how we can improve, we would really appreciate your time. Please email: [email protected] your contact information and the best date and time to be reached. Our members are incredibly important and we want you to feel valued and well served.

Update: I'm in the process of closing my accounts. In the age of mobile technology and ease of access - GRFCU is not on par with other financial institutions. If you're looking for a new bank or credit union I recommend going somewhere else. Original comments: I've banked here for 15 years and have loved everything about Great River Federal Credit Union. I haven't been local to the St. Cloud area for about six years now and have never considered changing banks... Until recently. The core system upgrade that has been going on for the last few days has been the most frustrating thing I've ever experienced with this bank. Initially there was very little information to members about what exactly was happening and how long the process would take. Then after being told my automatic payments and transfers would not be affected the system failed to make a transfer, online banking says it can't find my account, and I can't even check my account history to see if the transfer actually failed. The website claims things will be a little strange and I should check my E-statements. The E-statement feature doesn't work I've tried three different browsers with no success. Seriously looking at refinancing my auto loans with a different institution and closing my accounts with Great River Federal. I spoke with a customer service representative who said he would call me back on 2/4 to confirm if my transfers went through. Update 2/4: customer service called back and stated that my transfers did not go through but that they would back date my payment to the first to adjust for interest gained. That was nice to hear. Additionally I'm either experiencing more problems with the new system than everyone else or I'm just overly vocal when my banking isn't working as intended. Customer service to call back on 2/7. Update 2/10: I was never contacted again by GRFCU customer service. I attempted to set up my automatic transfers again and they all have an error "Options used in this transfer are no longer available." I don't want to spend anymore of my time dealing with a broken banking system. This transition was very poorly executed by GRFCU.

    Response from the owner

Thank you for your candid response Tanner! We want to hear from our members, especially for situations that are more unique like this one. Our previous system was well over 20 years old and was full of "work around" processes to continually be able to progress with the times as banking and how people access their money changes. When most financial institutions implemented their core account systems, they didn't even have a website and terms like "online banking" were not a topic of discussion. We were at a point where we were hitting more road blocks and needed to look at other systems that can grow with us and not have delays when launching new, unique products and account types. Because we were moving such a robust amount of information, not 100% of account transactions mapped over correctly, but we were able to address and adjust. It sounds like you were unfortunately one of those few situations. We are so sorry about that! The good news is that everything is track-able. We've had an "all hands on deck" mentality here to quickly adjust those situations and dig into the "why's" behind them and fix it as soon as we can. Our sincerest apologies for you having to spend time on this! It is the last thing we want. Finances are such an important part of our daily lives and we are working to make it as convenient as possible going forward. One of our Managers will be calling you to walk through your concerns. Hopefully we can earn back your trust that we've built over the last 15 years!

I banked here for years, but consistently found their policies to be focused on the credit union, rather than the members. During my time there, they instituted a fee for checking accounts, which I've never heard of a credit union doing, and isn't the norm in this area, even if it's done elsewhere. I have since moved to another, much more member-centric credit union, and I have not once regretted my decision.

    Response from the owner

Hi Eric! Thank you for your candid review. We appreciate your feedback and apologize that you have had those experiences. We are working diligently to improve products and conveniences to our members. Please know some fees implemented and changes in policies were not taken lightly by our Employees and Board of Directors. Many have been adjusted and/or no longer exist. Member satisfaction is at the forefront of our planning and we are working to improve upon it daily!

I recently opened an account with GRFCU. I like to support local businesses and I have enjoyed seeing how this credit union makes a difference in the community with so many sponsored events and support! They ROCK! Also, I had a member advisor, Nick, personally reach out to me at least 3 times to ensure everything was going ok, tell me about a referral bonus and answer any questions. What an amazing experience in banking!

    Response from the owner

Wow! What wonderful things to hear! Thank you for taking the time to leave this review and for your membership! We truly love being a part of this community, and love that you noticed. Thank you again!
