Rackham Golf Course Reviews
P
What a fall from grace Rackham has had, even more depressing to realize the course essentially clawed it’s way back from being a useless money pit for the longest time. Long story short, do NOT waste your money with these clowns. Rackham had a few good years around 2015-2019 with a competent grounds crew and GM, but after the firing of the head grounds keeper it has noticeably sunk back to being the joke of a course it once was. GM doesn’t care to hire competent crews or Marshall’s anymore so you’re left with a course that consists of wildly under maintained greens, fairways that are 75% dirt and mud, and sand that somehow stays perpetually rock hard. The pace of play has become such a joke that finishing 18 in 5 hours is considered a godsend. You’re told that tee times after 5:30 don’t matter and it quickly becomes “first come first serve” format despite the manager insisting that isn’t true (it is). You will actively find that people drive over tee boxes and greens with carts with no repercussions, divots in the fairway are never filled in, and the greens look like a constant mine field. Long story short, this course is an absolute joke. The marshal doesn’t know how to coordinate tee times (last time we played there were 16 players lined up for tee times and it was considered “fast”), the grounds look worse each day that passes, and the manager doesn’t care one bit. Save your money for literally anywhere else. Edit for the owners response: The course is constantly like this when even the slightest bit of rain falls because you never restrict cart use. Almost every respected course I’ve played restricts play to walking on wet days and yet Rackham clearly does not. Even in the pictures it’s clear that the greens and tees were torn up because carts were riding over essentially a mud pit. Using the rain as an excuse for the poor condition of the property is a lame attempt to explain why carts are being used on flooded fairways. What’s even worse about your reply is it doesn’t address the complaint about slow play nor does it address the issue with tee times not being adhered to in the slightest. It’s sad that you phrase my preferences of having the Marshal stick to tee-times as booked, having the fairways not be constantly gouged out from carts running during floods, and adhering to a rate of play under 3 hours for 9 holes as anything beyond bottom barrel requirements for a halfway decent course. Cheap cop-out reply. The title of “clown” remains accurate.
Peter I'm sorry you think of our team as clowns. Our clowns are as depressed as you claim to be about our course conditions. We have a plan, it will be executed and the turf will be restored. In the mean time, I hope you find a wonderful course that meets all of your expectations and has not experienced 21" of rain in the last 11 weeks.

They are the only course under Golf Detroit that charge weekend rates for Friday. I find it offensive not right to the public so I and my buddies don’t play there anymore.
Mr. Tyner I appreciate that fact that you took time to express your feelings. I don’t make business decisions designed to upset our customer base. I make them to sustain and grow our business. Operating a golf course is a very expensive proposition especially in a seasonal market such as Michigan. For everyone who is offended by our Friday rates there are 10 who have no issue at all. If Rouge Park and Chandler Park had the demand for tee times that Rackham does, we’d charge weekend rates on Friday at those courses as well.

Fun Donald Ross municipal course. Cool hole design, especially on the original back 9, but the front is plenty of fun too. Greens have been in good shape when I’ve played. Its always packed, but if you can find your flow you’ll have fun playing here. It also has drainage issues, so better to play when it’s dry or hasn’t rained recently. Look for the massive buck that lives on the course!

Love this course, great staff well designed for a public. But today the greens keeper must have been in a terrible mood, whites were deep and flags on hills, dam man, shot a 94

My son and I played here today. The course is in good shape. Everything was green and very pretty. They did have some water damage from all of the rain but they're working on restoration. Gorgeous trees and long fairways. I think the rangers need to be more proactive with the slowpokes. Will play here again.

Very nice golf course clean well-kept and the staff is very friendly. The course wide open but also challenging. Great weekend play.😎🏌⛳
Thanks for the compliment Charles. How to see you often

Sunday August 15, 2021 Played there this morning and I’m surprised they were even letting anyone on the course. We had torrential rains last Wednesday and several fairways were literally flooded. When we checked in we were told they were waiving all cart fees because the course was wet. Ok cool…. I appreciate that. However, had I known how bad it was, I might have skipped it altogether. We did our level best to drive in the rough and walk to our balls as much as possible, but in some places there was no way to avoid driving through standing water. The course it going to need a lot of repair. I just hope whatever $$ they are making sending anyone out in this covers the repair cost. There were hoses on some holes and it appears they had tried to get rid of some of it, but not even close. I took several pictures but could not find a way to post them. Being fair, I golfed here on a league 6 years ago and was excited to go back and play there. I heard they had fixed it up and I really wanted to see it.
Mr.Horton I appreciate your comments. Like every situation we need perspective to truly understand what is happening. What you saw last week was not the result of neglect or greed. We have been inundated with rain throughout this summer. Crocks and drains have been full so there is nowhere to pump the standing water. The decision to open last week may not have been the right one but we had to open at some point. We have a plan to restore the lost turf but it will take time, probably more time than we have this season. What I would like you and every other customer to know is the Rackham team takes pride in our work and strive to make the course and the experience the best that it can be. Karen Peek

Started golfing here pretty regularly after moving to Ferndale and I absolutely love it. The staff and rangers are so kind and maintenance takes great care of the course. It gets pretty busy sometimes, but the rangers are always accommodating and give me the option to play the back or the front first depending on the traffic. I always have a great experience.

Spend your time and money elsewhere. I enjoyed this course for a while, but it has taken a turn for the worse over the last couple years. At least half the fairways have gaping dead spots from their flood damage. They are one of the worst courses I've been to in terms of managing tee time separation. They regularly book tee times less than 6-8 minutes apart so you're lucky if you see any less than 2 foursomes at a tee box, and that includes the first tee box. Then when it gets backed up, they don't have any rangers out to moderate pace of play. Even if you call, they don't send anyone out regardless of what they tell you. Every time I have played here the round takes at least 5 hours. When we were there this past Sunday, we already surpassed the 1 hour mark when we got to the 4th tee box. I have no intention of playing here again unless I hear things have gotten significantly better.

For such a old course that’s public and been around for a very long time, this course is very well maintained. This is a very well known Donald Ross designed golf course and will always be a gem. It’s very fortunate that this course is a public course as it could very well be a private course. Simply a fantastic course.

Worst. Golf. Experience. Ever. Policy forced me to rent clubs since I’d didn’t bring my own. Once I got them, one of the old men drove me to the first hole and told me “try not to steal” the clubs. I was there for a bachelor party and we had 2 groups of 4. Course was moving extremely slowly (almost 3 hours for 9 holes). So we decided to combine groups to move quickly. Towards the last holes were playing (8 and 9), one of the old men was scolding us for combining groups. They simply were not doing their job by moving the course along. We originally paid for 18 holes and my experience was so bad, I asked for half of my money back. The only good part of this experience was the front desk ladies. They were great. So unless you want to be harassed, DO NOT go here. I had high hopes for this place.

They cater to your needs excellent place I love it
Thanks Albert we are delighted that you enjoyed your experience.

4/24/22- Rackham golf course 👍👍👍👍👍 Course 👍 - maintain decent but not great. Most of the holes are muddy with rain but greens are in great shape. Lot of sand bunkers and few holes has tree hazards. Some of the holes close by so need to watch out. Not recommended if rains badly Value of the money 👍 - $35 for 18 holes decent price for this course. Hope this stay Amenities 👍- chipping / putting area there. Proshop has food and drinks but no beer cart girl in the course though Pace of the play 👍 - Ranger was there at 1st holes but not saw at course but since we go morning and most of the time pace of the play was ok Staff & management👍 - we had bad experience before but this season so far great experience from staff and manager was very responsive and supportive --- May 2021⭐⭐⭐ Course is decent and fareways could have been better. Green challengeble and not easy. Green maintained pretty good. Busy days expected back up and need better tee management. Missing beer at 90s and could have been better. We bought tee time from golf now and had tough time to honor the golf now price. After long arguments with staff offered "one time courtesy". Watch out on this and not sure why miscommunication with golf now and this has to be fixed.
Raj I sincerely hope there was no argument involved. Golf Now posted rates for all day Saturday that we intended for 2:00pm and beyond. Of course that is our issue to resolve and you should have received the rate you saw online.

If you are a skilled golfer who appreciates playing with regular pace, this is not the place for you. I live nearby and will book a tee time when I want to get a quick round in. Every time I have played rackham in 2021, it was the exact opposite. 3.5 hours on the first 9 last week. 3 hours the week before. I have left 3 rounds in a row after 9 even though I paid for 18 because it is unbearably slow. I was curious why it was constantly overbooked, and after a quick phone call to the course it turns out they accept all walk-ups. Resulting in 10 minute waits between holes. If you have other options, choose them. Doing a disservice to Ross courses especially in its current condition I won’t be back

Rackham is solid fun - probably the only negatives about the course are that it could be better cared for and that some of the yardages seem a little goofy. But it's in a great location and a decent public course. Revised 2022: knocking a star off for a couple reasons: 1, no yardage markers at holes anymore; and 2, no water on the course ANYWHERE even on a 97-degree day. Very irresponsible.
Thank you AJ for taking the time to comment. I am very interested in hearing your thoughts on specific areas that could be in better. I certainly have thoughts myself but would love to hear your perspective. Send me an email at [email protected]. Thanks again

Horrible course. Grass is overgrown and the bunkers barely even exist. Puddles of water all over for months. And let’s not mention how I had to pay $30 for twilight golf while the course is an absolute shambles. The management might be the worst part, not doing anything about the 40 minute delay for slow pace of play. The starters are sleeping on the job, not paying attention to any sort of pace of play. Hideous would be an understatement to the conditions of the bathrooms and the greens look more like a child sandbox. Overall a horrible experience and would never recommend to any golf connoisseur. Absolutely pathetic!!!!!
