Here’s some information about the holds that gas stations place on cards: When anyone uses a credit or debit card to purchase gas, there is an “authorization hold” placed on the card (this is not specific to any bank or credit union, this is a universal practice at any gas station). An authorization hold is the practice of approving electronic transactions (such as using a debit or credit card) of a specified amount (this is usually more than the actual expected transaction amount) and holding this balance until the transaction clears. For example, a gas station may place a $50 hold when authorizing the card even if the customer only intends to purchase $20 in gas. The $50 hold will remain until the transaction clears, which can take up to 48-72 hours, or sometimes longer (it depends on the merchant). We do not have any control over the holds that a merchant places on a card. With that said, if your brother is still having issues a week or so after he was at the pump, have him reach out to us!
