    Computer History Museum Reviews

I was visiting the area for a wedding so I had some extra time to kill before my flight and I’m glad I chose to see this museum to fill that time because there is so much to see with so many well detailed exhibits and real world examples. I spent about two hours devouring as much of the content as I could. I myself was a finance major and work in investments so I don’t have a technical or professional background in computers but I use them every day at work and in my personal life so I was surprised to see how much I recognized and could understand. They do a great job dividing it into many different sections and numbering each one with a defined walking path that takes you from start to finish. There are video, pictures, information boards, interactive video games you can play, movies to watch, and so many other things that really allow you to immersive yourself into the material. Overall I would recommend to anyone even if you don’t have a background in computers like myself. Parking is extremely easy and pricing is fair so there really is no reason not to go. Enjoy!

I visited this museum. The museum greeter checked the covid vaccination card with picture id. Parking is good in the parking lot. The exhibits in the museum are informational and fun. The tour by the hour at noon is relevant to computer history.

Good to visit You travel back in the history of computer and high tech companies The Computer History Museum (CHM) is a museum of computer history, located in Mountain View, California. The museum presents stories and artifacts of Silicon Valley and the information age, and explores the computing revolution and its impact on society. In 1999, TCMHC incorporated and TCM ceased operation, shipping its remaining artifacts to TCMHC in 2000. The name TCM had been retained by the Boston Museum of Science so, in 2000, the name TCMHC was changed to Computer History Museum (CHM). In 2002, CHM opened its new building, previously occupied by Silicon Graphics, at 1401 N. Shoreline Blvd in Mountain View, California, to the public. The facility was later heavily renovated and underwent a two-year $19 million makeover before reopening in January 2011.

This place is really good. My wife & I spent about 2-2.5 hours here, and ran out of time. The exhibits are great, the history is great, and the staff were incredibly friendly. When they found out we were sightseeing, the provided us with a list of other must-see areas in the Bay. Over the top customer service! Thanks for such a great museum and welcoming experience!

Easily spent the whole day here. Open to close it was full of a ton of interesting displays. If you only have a passing interest it's still at least a few hours of cool stuff to see. For enthusiasts you won't want to leave. Clean facilities and really friendly staff.

Friendly staff, easy parking, and the exhibits themselves are nicely laid out in a sequential order. For most people I would say 2-3 hours is enough time here. However, the descriptions of many of the items are lacking any layman's terms and do a poor job of providing an overall concept for the evolution of machines.

In many ways, this is the best museum that I have ever visited. You will learn of the many strides taken across centuries, that led us to this moment where I can write this review and you can read it. And as you do, you will have a renewed sense of appreciation of all the technological marvels we have at our disposal today. One thing I learnt was that people in centuries past had much less leisure time than we do; It took them a lot more time to do the same tasks we do today in a moment. Then I realized that the abundant leisure time I enjoy today is the result of the toil and sweat of hundreds, maybe thousands of people who worked hard to develop the things we take for granted. What will you and I do with the time that their labour has afforded us?

Outstanding! Every exhibit is well done; such a wide range of exhibits. The IBM 1401 computer demo and the tour of the exhibits were informative. The docents knew their subject matter.

The museum is amazing and a must see for everyone who loves technology and wants to learn more about the history present and future of computers and their power. This is quite large place and with so many interactive areas so plan few hours of fun time there. Museum is great for kids and adults. My family spent the whole day there and the food is amazing too. We will definitely be back.

Awesome place! Always wanted to visit this museum since I moved to Bay Area. Finally got the chance. It didn’t only live up to the expectations but surpassed my expectations. They just have a vast number of exhibits. You can easily spend 3-4 hours just browsing through all the exhibits and traveling through time from 1930s computes to today. Very informative. Good place to take kids.

This is one of the best places have been being a software engineer myself, I felt nostalgic and very emotional that how far we have come in the IT age. They have very beautifully maintained the history of computer in this museum. It’s must go for every person on earth who has ever used an electronic device. You be ready to spend approx. 3 hours to cover all the items. They have lots of place where they play videos explaining the history.

A great place to visit for those working in technology and engineering. Despite having had much of the history covered in computing education in my past, I still learnt a massive amount more to sit on top of it. The staff are super enthusiastic and the exhibits put together fantastically. Keep an eye out for Groupon discounts to keep the price down, and the discounts for sponsoring businesses.

The computer history museum offers a huge collection of computer artifacts through the years, including the very first Apple computer, Commodore, Amiga, etc. It was interesting to learn and see more about the history of the silicon valley. However, I expected more live demos such as more retro gaming as well as more info about open source through the years. Anyway, it is a must-see attraction for any geek :)

Worth the cost of admission even if you're just slightly interested. Luckily we had a Groupon which brought the cost down to ~$9/person, even better! We spent 5 hours here, which was admittedly a bit too long, but it was fun learning how to use an abacus and slide rule, playing Adventure, and seeing how technology has developed over such a short amount of time. Makes you feel old though, seeing tech you grew up with in a HISTORY MUSEUM! Next time, we'll join one of the free tours and make sure to check the demo schedules!

I am leaving a review for the staff and the event spaces. The building itself is nice and very well maintained. The staff is super helpful. The Hahn hall is almost turnkey. You don't need much setup done. The Grand hall is almost bare. You'd have to do a lot of work in that room. From getting additional chairs to audiovisual to getting a stage. The halls do not have dividers so if you're thinking about renting one hall and trying to run parallel sessions, this may be impossible unless you go sourcing dividers from outside.

Love this place. So many things to see and learn. History of computers, computing and technology. I've been here a few times and while some exhibits have been the same each time, they do add new and interesting things throughout. They also have meeting spaces that can be booked for events. There is also a wonderful place that caters food for purchase. I think this is a must visit at least once.

I have a thousand photos to share about this place, but to sum it up: This is a tech-lover's heaven. Open spaces, tons of materials about computing history throughout several millennia (from the ancient civilizations to self-driving cars), and a very large selection of souvenirs are sure to make people happy. You can spend an entire day there taking photos and not notice how much time has passed. I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting San Francisco.

If you're around it's a must visit. I wish I could have more time but unfortunately had a flight to catch. They have a huge collection and seeing how technology has been evolved was so great. The layout is really well-structured and feel like a travel in time. Definitely recommend!!!

Unique place to go through the history of computers and technology. Definitely a go to make your Silicon Valley tour complete. Close to Google. I love the exhibitions. Really really awesome place for any tech geek like me. So much history of human achievement and out insatiable quest for knowledge. Anyone passing through San Jose or coming back from San Fran should check this place out. They even have a section of the world's first electronic computer!

It was an awesome experience. That's what I can say. If you are a computer enthusiast or just want to explore how the we got surrounded by these programmable beasts, you should for sure visit this place once. At a cheap end for individuals, it's a really great place to be. I paid $17 for it but one can easily find a Groupon deal for this place. It has tons of parking space and also enabled for the people with disability. It's wheelchair accessable and great place for young kids. With 20 different sections, I would recommend you to have around 4-5 hours in hand. Though the place is not too big but you will have lot of information to gulp down. You will see artifacts never seen before and some relics are really rare. On the other hand, after visiting this place, you will for sure have a deep appreciation for computer industry and how it has changed the way we evolved as a community.

Definitely one of the highlights of my visit to California, this museum had a lot of quirky stuff for me to geek out over. Babbage's difference engine, the enigma machine, the Utah teapot, pong, Nintendo 64, screenshots from Netscape. I had a blast. Wish I could have spent more time there. My main complaint is that I don't feel like I learned much there. There were a lot of curiosities, and information about them, but I could have done more with historical context, audiovisuals, direct quotes and suchlike (like they did with the Collosus computer that defeated the enigma machine!! I loved that) I would have liked to go to the demo rooms or have followed the tour guide. Regardless it was wonderful.

As an IBM divested employee (IBM sold my division to another company) it was fun looking at all the old IBM hardware and remembering that I had my own SP machine in the 90s back when it beat Gary Kasprov in chess. A nice collection of stuff from early mice to self driving cars. Worth a visit.

One of the must-visits when around the silicon valley. Good for people interested in tech and people new to tech alike. Children will also find interesting things here from hands on programming to interactive exhibits and easy to understand videos. The newer but smaller section about autonomous vehicles is very cool and I'm looking forward to how it evolves in the future.

This place is truly for anyone with an interest in computers. The exhibits are well thought out, extremely informational, and fun. How do you realise that you are getting old or at least (and more gentle) older? You go to a museum. You stand in front of some nice exponates and thin fc**** I even have used this staff some time ago and now it's in a museum! The exhibition is realy great and not only for tech or computer nerds. Definitely you should go there if you are around in Silicon Valley.

Unfortunately arrived with only an hour to spare before closing so had to do a speed tour, but there is a vast amount of computer history to be found here. If you are remotely interested in the history of computing, then this place is well worth a pilgrimage. Relics span from the 1930s (and prior) through to about 2010, offering a detailed overview of the different systems available and the technology behind them. My only criticism would be that there isn’t more from the 2000s (no Apple machines from 1997 onwards for example) which I feel is a very important period in computer history. Add some “newer” history and we’ve got a winner on our hands.

Must visit for anyone interested in computing history. ENIAC (it is decimal!), IBM 360, Apollo command module, PDP to name a few systems. It is also the story of many great people not just machines - Turing, Von Neumann, Fred Brooks, Grace hopper and Margaret Hamilton to name a few people.

I love this museum. In a way it gives prospective to my life's journey. For years DOS and floppy disks were the stuff of dreams. The museum's extensive exhibits illuminate the 2000 year history of the magical machines that changed the world and the women and men that dreamed and built them. There's even a car driven by a Google Genie. The cafe is suprisingly good. Parking is free. Wheelchair accessible including bathrooms.

Being a pretty big technology geek, I was really excited to come here. I showed up right when they opened and there were already plenty of people in line. The museum itself is big-ish, but smaller than the size of the building would suggest. The exhibits are all on the bottom floor, and the second floor is mostly auditoriums and classrooms for lectures and workshops and stuff. The main exhibit is "Revolution," which is an extensive history of computers, starting from calculators (like abacus kind of stuff) all the way up to self driving cars, supercomputers, and artificial intelligence. There are a lot of excellent donations, like real super computers and chips and all that kind of stuff -- very cool to see! The end of the exhibit, around more modern day, was less exciting for me, but there is still a lot of really cool information. Speaking of which, everything is really well explained, with enough detail to learn something, but enough brevity to prevent you from wanting to read. I wasn't able to stop in the other exhibitions like the self driving car and interactive areas, but I was mostly interested in the history anyway. Overall, the layout was really easy to follow and very informative! The price is good, and if you're a student it's even better ($13.50 I think). Can easily spend 2ish hours here, and I'd recommend giving it a go if you're interested in the history behind the technology that we're all so used to these days!

As a self-proclaimed geek, this museum has been on my bucket list for years. I'm so glad I finally got a chance to visit. The museum explains a lot of technical topics in easy to understand terms, go you can definitely bring your family (maybe not small kids though). So much to see! The short tour is highly recommended: It won't give you an overview over the museum, as it picks only a handful of important devices, but the volunteers all have a silicon valley history and can tell great stories. I just wish the museum would be a little more keen to keep its devices dust free. Especially the latter part of the exhibition is really dusty, which is a shame. Also, I find the way they sort the exhibition a bit confusing, as the decades sometimes abruptly change. But, all in all a great experience, would come back!

This place requires vaccine forms for kids also (they either want to force kids to take vaccines to go to places, or want to open but not for kids). In other places, kids are not required to have vaccine forms. Don't want to come back here until they change this non-sense policy.

One of the best museum i ever been! Maybe because i'm a geek or something like that but it is really well done and interesting. You navigate through the early ages of computing until the modern times through many themes like robots, rockets, graphic design, music, medical, etc... You can also see an old IBM computer (the huge ones who take a whole room) operate. You can input your name and it will print it in a nice ASCII art! So cool! You can also see and go inside a Waymo car, and discover so much things! Definitely a must visit place if you go in the Silicon Valley!

It has vastly changed since I last went about 12 years ago. It's has transformed from a warehouse display to a contemporary museum. Mainframes and Minicomputers have sadly shrunk in display, but the Microcomputers of the 80s and 90s have been fleshed out and put on display. There's even a number of video game consoles.

    - when so much of this history is dominated by white men, do you as a modern institution really need to perpetuate sexist storytelling with your descriptions? No. That connection (see red arrow) between mini skirts and mini-computers is sexist. The field of tech has a real gender discrimination problem, there's no need to make it worse. - can you please offer foldable seats? I really liked reading about the evolution of technology but the benches were few and far between. + well organized galleries with informative displays that manage to connect various threads and break down complex technical information. + You can learn how stuff works like the Abacus and Napier's bones.

Thank you to Grace! She made my experience unforgettable! I was just wandering around trying to find a perfect spot for a picture, she approached us and offered to assist with her expertise. She helped me by taking picture at different angel and ensuring I am satisfied. Honestly....without her assistant I would of been "whatever" for the price we had pay for our general admission. Thank you so much grace! You are truly the nicest human ever! I am glad we across path this holiday.

Everything is great, except for one thing which ruined the entire experience and feelings. On the globe, which is giving a Google Earth experience there is a huge issue: the Crimea is DIVIDED from Ukraine by the border, otherwise it is NOT divided from russia. It looks like Crimea is a part of russia, which is NOT! While there is a war in Ukraine, which is because of russian military intervention and aggression, they are showing annexed Crimea as a part of the aggressor territory. This is a big shame on such a great place, unfortunately :-(

Really nice exhibits, especially if you have a historical interest in old technology. My only caution is that it's a little too easy to get lost in the rather circuitous path they want you to follow. Definitely worth more than the day we spent and thus a return visit is highly likely.

All the rooms are so photogenic!! Take as much photos as you like. Even though it's pretty crowded but people take turns to take photos at some spot. You can go back and forth from one room to another if you want to take more photos. Overall great experience!!

You really need at least 3 hours to visually appreciate this place, and there's lots of interesting history to read about. Nice exhibits, not over crowded or cluttered, goes through a good span of the history of computers, and has some nice videos with important historical figures in them to watch. Not expensive to get in, well worth the price, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I don't think young kids will appreciate something like this, but if you're into computers and over 30 or want to know where your phone evolved from, you'll want to see this place. If I'm in the area again, I'll definitely be coming back and spending more time here.

Probably the best museum I've ever visited. A must for anyone who likes or works with computing devices. I initially planned to be there no longer than 2 hours but ended up staying almost 6 hours and skipped my lunch. This place chronicles all the small little breakthroughs that led to where we are today. The guided tour at 12pm and 2pm is highly recommended. The museum also has special demos of some of the restored relics, such as the first hard disk, IBM punch card machines, PDP1 etc. I can't recommend this place highly enough for anyone who is the least bit curious about computers.

If you are a 'TECH' person, you must go here. Worth to visit. I will suggest to take a guided tour. It is available free of cost. Arranged twice in a day. Guides are very much informative. Sometimes we can not see, what they show us. Don't go on SIZE or space available. Much more to read, much more to learn, much more to know on every wall, every piece, every corner of museum. Please go early, so that you can take advantage of your money. But you will always have that hunger to visit again and again. Can not complete in one visit. We were there till security person came to us to say please leave. If your kids are studying, it would be great for them as well.

This place is absolutely amazing. FREE PARKING in case you wonder. Spawned from the defunct Computer Museum of Boston, this small venue packs quite a bit of artifacts into its available space. Only one floor is used for exhibits, upper floor might be a function hall. This is a place for kids to seniors, who would like to witness the evolution of computing from encoded strings (actual organic strings) to abacus, to punch cards, to tape, disk, display, etc. Learn about mechanical, electro-mechanical, vacuum tube, transistor and integrated circuit computing. Analog, digital, 3D and 4D worlds are right in front of you! Also, plenty of pop culture home computing machines and home video game consoles. Interactive exhibits do change periodically, and I'm told there is 30% on display out of the endowment! Take the free 1hr guided tour if the museum isn't crowded! I also witnessed an IBM Mainframe demo. The museum volunteers are are full of wisdom, and are very helpful. What an amazing experience! Long live the Commodore Amiga! :)

Amazing collection of hardware and nicely presented. Makes it interesting and relevant for all people without or without computer knowledge to go there. Also I really like there current interactive installation about software and the importance it has for the world we live in today. Also prices are reasonable and they give student discounts. You can easily spend a day here if you're a computer enthusiast or at least half a day if you're anyone else.

If you're a tech savvy you'll love this place. This covers almost everything how technology evovled from ancient period untill now. For cheap deals, don't forget to check the tickets on Groupon. We got tickets for $12 through Groupon for two. The cafe is small but they have good salads. No food and drinks are allowed inside. Cool clean museum and we'll maintained.

I came to this museum 4 years ago when I was in San Jose on business. 4 years later I'm back to San Jose on business and one of my first trips is here. I'm an engineer and to me art museums haven't been that interesting because I prefer to see how things have contributed to what we do in our daily lives..a lot of people enjoy art, I don't, but I love museums like this. I still check them out occasionally though. Back in ma, every year we buy a membership to the museum of science because those are the kind of museums I like to visit. If I lived in San Jose if come here multiples times in a year. Last time I was here, I left on 4 hours cause my phone battery was dying, this time I brought backup batteries. Check Goldstar for coupons.

Awesome museum – a must for any technophile. It was easy to find and has a fair amount of parking. The building is a large 2 story structure but all the exhibits are on the first floor. We got a discount buying tickets online so I would suggest going online to see if you can get do the same thing. You check in at the front counter where they give you a collar tab to wear and a map. They offer tours at certain times of the day. We took the one at noon. It was fascinating. The displays are very well done and the tour guide was extremely knowledgeable. Once we finished the tour we wandered the rest of the museum. There is a group of interactive displays that teach programming and other rooms that we didn’t even get to. I plan to visit here again. Great museum.

It was very interesting, however I feel like someone in software would get a lot more out of it. One thing I was disappointed in was the lack of hands on activities and explanations. For example, the could have had a number of abacuses with simple explanations on how to do specific calculations with them so a parent could show their child how to use it, or some simple instructions with the "on-off" switches so someone could code a simple algorithm. Ultimately, I felt it would be very interesting for someone who already had some knowledge of software, but needed more hands-on activities and exercises for laypeople.
