WestStar Credit Union Reviews

Me and my husband have been member for years. We're on a long road trip, at the time of writing this we're in moab, UT. It's not irregular that the bank puts holds on our card if we've traveled a distance, but they will always call and ask. We were not informed, and the bank placed a hold on our card, right before we went to the grocery store. $200 in grocerys, and our card declines. We call the bank, and after a long hold, finally talk to a teller. She tried to help us but ultimately could not clear the block, so she put us on the phone with the manager, Theresa. After about 15 minutes of explaining to Theresa, she concluded that we were "putting in the wrong pin", and that the card should be cleared. After I confirmed that I was the correct pin, she told me the store must be having a problem with their system. It's a small but busy town full of traveling people, and it was 4:30 on a Friday, so the grocery store definitely wasn't having problems running anyone's card. She told is to try an ATM, or other financial institution. We found an ATM, but yet again, declined. Theresa puts us on hold again, for about 10 minutes. Once she gets back to the phone, she tells me she "checked with the IT department", and that I should try again. I try and it finally works, to which I say "so the problem WAS on your end". This seemed to set Ms. Theresa off, who told me that I have no right to speak to her that way, as I'm not the "account member" and got very fussy. I told her that the "account member" feels the same way, and gave the phone to my wife, who asked for an apology. Theresa informed my wife that "her husband shouldn't be so rude" and hung up the phone on my wife. I'm waiting on an apology, and myself, my wife, my brother, and my mother will all be closing our accounts in this credit union. I'm absolutely baffled that I was told I wa the problem multiple times, and it was the banks fault. I stood at the checkout for over 45mins on the phone just to be hung up on. I would absolutely tell people to avoid this place like the plague.

I recently opened up a loan to purchase a car from Carvana with WestStar. John A at WestStar was amazing in getting my loan all set up! He was super professional and efficient. Made the process so seamless!! I would highly recommend!!
Thank you so much for this awesome review Lisette! So glad we were able to help you with your new car!

They are very nice & broke down everything like no other bank has to me. I would be over paying for my car & having a high interest rate if it wasn’t for them. I fully recommend them.
Thanks Edward for your review! We love being able to help our members make the best financial decision, and are so glad we were able to help you too.

I have be with this bank for the past 3 years, and for the most part they're an OK bank to go with. In my personal opinion, they are behind other banks when it comes to services they offer. I did have some issues throughout my time with WestStar. For example, there have been a few times that I tried to make a purchase online, and half of the time your card doesn't go through because it was detected as suspected fraud. Following that, my card/account would be blocked and would either have to call or go into one of their branches to resolve the issue. If this bank were to catch up to other banks and become more up to date, then I believe it would be better.
Crism, thank you for your honest feedback! We really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. Admittedly, we are on the conservative side with regard to fraud prevention. Large banks can loosen up their fraud review process because they can afford to take more losses on fraud, but we opt to be more cautious. If we lose money on fraud, it makes a much larger impact to our bottom line, which could mean higher fees or loan rates to the members. We are working to implement a stronger fraud detection service that will hopefully reduce the number of false positive alerts we get on debit card transactions. Again, thank you so much for your review!

Very disappointed with the bank employee that opened my new checking account. The debit card was useless. Was declined repeatedly. Had to go back to resolve the issue. She had to make three new cards until it worked. The employee failed to order my new checks and I had to ask for temporary checks so I can take care of first of the month bills. Customer service is terrible. Reflects poor training. I do not plan to keep this account open too long.
Hi Virginia, We are so sorry to hear about your frustrating experience with opening your account. We will be reviewing procedures with our employees to ensure our account opening process is streamlined moving forward. Our management team will be reaching out to you today to discuss this situation further with you.

I would give negative stars if possible!!! I just moved here from AZ. Before going to this credit union today, I called ahead to see if walk-in service was available to set up a new account. On the phone the lady said yes. I verified and ask again, "If I walk in and try to open a new account I would be able to do so". She said yes... Again. I was there in less than 20 minutes and when I got there no one was there to greet me when I walked in. Thank goodness I have common sense and signed in on the clip board at the receptionist desk, which had no receptionist. I had been sitting in the "lobby", if that's what you call a area with random chairs set out, for about 10 minutes until someone finally communicated to me that new account services is about a 30 minute wait. I WAITED OVER AN HOUR and finally left. I will communicate to anyone I can how AWEFUL this business is.
Hello Naomie, I am so sorry your first impression of our credit union was a negative one. Like so many other businesses right now, we are still feeling the effects of the shutdown which include filling vacant positions as quickly as possible; however, there is no excuse for the wait time you experienced and for that we apologize. I would like the opportunity to make this right and personally assist you in getting your account opened so that you may enjoy all the benefits Weststar has to offer. Please contact me at 702-791-4777 and ask for Nina. Hope to hear from you soon!

I recently applied for a personal loan to help consolidate my debt and Brenda M. was absolutely fantastic helping me through the process. She was super responsive with phone calls and emails and she was just helpful throughout everything. I work and train customer service and she definitely set the gold standard for Weststar. Give her a raise immediately!
Hey Ryan! We really appreciate your review, and we think Brenda is pretty awesome too! Thank you so much for sharing your experience!

I mail my car payment, as usual, on the 5th of Aug. By the 20th, they said they hadn't received it. I call back a few days later, still no payment posted. I called and spoke with a "customer care"(joke) representative. She didn't listen to anything I said. Finally, I asked her, have you heard anything I have said? Her response was " you are out of control". I told her to transfer me to her supervisor, she hung up on me. I immediately called back., her supervisor answers and immediately started defending her, without hearing my side of the situation. I told the supervisor that I was going to Stop Payment, on the Cashiers check and bring a payment in, which I did. On 9/1/20, they find the check and then proceed to deposit it, which of course, it is declined. They charge me $38.50 for NSF, after being told I was going to Stop Payment, over a week earlier. So I paid $31 to stop payment from WF and due to your incompetence, another $38.50. I have a car loan with you. I tried to pay it off, over the phone. Was told, I could pay. $2000, today and most of the balance, tomorrow. Then I would have to come into the branch and pay the balance. Looks like another scam, to collect daily interest. Also, I made extra payments and specifically asked " will the extra payments be subtracted from the principal"? Yes, was the reply. Well that was a lie. When I asked why they hadn't contacted me , when they didn't receive my Aug payment, the response was, " you're paid up, until Sept 3." I've never used a bank or credit union that is so incompetent. They were great, when I opened my account. It's like, come into my parlor, said the spider to the fly. Then it goes down hill from there.
Hello Ms. Johnson, We appreciate that you took the time to share your feedback with us. Without a recording of your phone call, I do not know why our representative would have stated that you were "out of control". We will have internal dialogue with pertinent staff to better understand that situation. While it's unfortunate that you've had frustrations with making your loan payments to us from your bank, I can assure you that we have not ever attempted to prevent you from making additional payments in any effort to collect additional daily interest from you. As a bank customer, you may be more familiar with those kind of tactics. However, WestStar Credit Union is not-for-profit, and our goal is to help our members improve their financial situation. I am glad that we were able to get you an affordable auto loan when you needed it, and I see that you have since paid this loan in full - congratulations! Thank you again for sharing your experience. Feel free to reach out to me if you would like to discuss this further. Kelly Bond VP, Marketing & eCommerce [email protected]

I declared BK and was rebuilding my credit. John told me how to help accomplish that after getting me a less outrageous rate than my original one in September. My credit kept improving and I refinanced again. Now my rate is half of what it was when I 1st talked to John 4 months ago. Thank you John Antes and Weststar Credit Union.
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave this review. As a credit union our entire reason for existing is to help our members reach their financial goals. We're so glad that we were able to help you with a lower rate and look forward to helping you in the future. Have a great day!
