My husband and I have only reached out to Tilson within the last week and we have been given so much information just through 2 phone calls and emails. We hope to set up our 1st meeting very soon to get started on our forever dream home. My review is a little early in this process because so far we've been really impressed with the abundance of information we've gotten from the website including the live seminars. Yes I know they're ultimately trying to sell a product like any other business but, I have seen some bad reviews here that are not really helpful. Most complaints are because of how long it took to build a home. With my research just on the seminars alone (several), they cannot finish a home in less than 12 months. I have had other builders tell me the same thing. I say all this to say, we have not stepped foot into any of their offices and we ALREADY know that we are choosing them as out builder. We know what we want and we're confident that Tilson can provide what we want. And that's just from 2 phone calls and 2 emails!😉

    Response from the owner

Thank you for your kind words, Sameika! We're so excited to hear that our website and live seminars have been helpful in the early stages of your home search. We are honored that you've chosen us as your builder already and look forward to getting started on designing a plan with you soon. Thank you again for taking the time to share this review--we want all of our customers to feel confident about their decision before they commit, so it's great to know we're on the right track!

Some buyer’s remorse. Should have used a true custom home builder. Trash around our property during the build. Substandard drywall and painters. Luckily we have a family member in that business that caught the flaws. Made notes in case of future issues. Cabinets are a huge issue. First night In the house and the cabinet door literally falls apart. 3 weeks to get a “new” scratched one without a knob. Again we had to call. Again substandard. Design center individual is not knowledgeable about the products or colors. Lack of communication a huge issue. No attention to detail. Do not look to Tilson for a custom home. Air conditioning flipped a breaker due to filter issues after 30 days. Plugs not working. Told to call warranty department. Warranty?? Are you kidding? It’s been less than 45 days...again. Not a custom home builder.

    Response from the owner

We're sorry to hear you were disappointed with your experience. We stand behind the quality of our homes and our in-house warranty team will get these issues fixed for you as soon as possible.

We signed a contract with Tilson in August 2020. We are 7 months in and we’re told we would originally have a closing date of end of April/ early May. Here it is, end of March and we barely have plumbing done. We have framing (missing windows, patchy board and batten, half done stain) all the jobs have not been finished. We don’t understand why they are not finished and are so sporadic. Our builder lies to us and tells us new projects will be started the next week and then they never happen or one out of the three jobs he says does. We have to reach out to him, as apparently he is too busy to reach out to us (he made this clear), so we have to check in with him to see what is happening. We WOULD NOT know what is happening if we didn’t reach out. There have been so many weeks and days with no work. We feel as if he manages too many houses and we are not being taken care of. We are going to be paying around 340,000 for our dream home. Is this how you would want yours built? We originally went with Tilson because Patricia, our designer told us Tilson provided a schedule once you get building so you knew when each project took place. We are planners so we were ecstatic with this news. Our builder told us get with me anytime time, I’m your guy day or night, if someone doesn’t show up, etc. but doesn’t hold up to that. We immediately asked our builder several times when we might get a schedule and kept getting put off and we’re being told after weather stages. We are well past those stages and still haven’t received one. How can he give us one when he has 20+ other houses he is building ? We are definitely getting pushed back and highly dissatisfied with the process thus far and feel we should be farther. We don’t even have door locks on our house even though we have had doors for well over a month and my husband has contacted our builder numerous times to warn him of the wind whipping the doors open. Now there are cracks in the door frame that will have to be fixed. We were also told the trash pile would be picked up 2-3 times during the building process, but hasn’t been picked up once. There’s trash flying all around the pasture. Not to mention the mess all around the inside. It’s disgusting and I am so disappointed. I hope we will stop getting neglected by our builder, and get our house done so they can move on to the other ones so we can be done!

    Response from the owner

Mrs. Waters – we’re so sorry to hear that your experience hasn’t met expectations. We want everyone who builds to have a great experience so we take your concerns to heart. We will certainly address the cleanliness issues and regret your family had to deal with this. For those new to building a custom home, the process can sometimes look like things are being left undone or half-finished while we’re waiting for the next step to be completed. It’s difficult to provide a schedule for work to be done right now. He’s not intending to mislead you by providing schedules that don’t come true. We are building your home in times we’ve never seen before. The pandemic caused unprecedented material shortages all construction components - windows, lumber, steel, plumbing, appliances, etc. These issues are exasperated by record demand for new home construction straining labor availability. That was the situation before we had a week long ice storm in Texas that only increased these problems. Communication is key to getting through this and we’ve passed your comments along to your builder so he can reach out and address your concerns. While we sincerely wish things we more predictable, we cannot change what’s happening in the supply chain and labor markets. What we can do is promise you that your home will be completed to match the plans and specifications we all signed, for the price on the contract.

Tilson built a new home for us. We love the home overall. Some things had to be redone, but their Warranty Service was excellent - very responsive and done right the second time. :)

    Response from the owner

Thank you, David! It’s an honor to get to serve you and your family in building your new home on your land. We wish everything was perfect the first time around but know it can't always be so. We're glad our in-house warranty team was able to make it right for you. Thank you for trusting Tilson Homes.

We had a wonderful experience with Tilson. They use great quality supplies and their staff are amazing! Our home was built on schedule and if anything wasn't going as planned, our superintendent would always let us know. Communication is key and they were great at keeping us informed. We would definitely build again with them.

Incredibly disappointed with Tilson’s service. I have waited so long and worked so hard to be in the position to build my family’s home and I wasted months of my time with Tilson. We even signed a contract but Tilson backed out of it because of a pond that used to be on my lot. This decision was made without even testing the dirt at all. We went ahead and paid a lab to get the area tested in 6 spots and all results indicated the dirt was good and compacted for building. While my experience has been unpleasant, I will say that Patricia at the Angleton was great. Unfortunately, I don’t see myself sharing any good feedback on Tilson down the road, especially when we’ve selected a true custom builder who has exceeded the expectations we’ve set. If you’re looking for a custom home, Tilson is not what you’re looking for. A custom home isn’t choosing the 3 options the builder give you and upgrading 20 levels when you decide you don’t want any of those options, it’s getting the exact product you want for a fair price. I hope others get a better experience than we did.

    Response from the owner

We're sorry you're disappointed with your experience with us and that we were unable to build for you. Let me first say: We didn't get into the homebuilding business to NOT build houses. We want to build as many homes as we can to help families like yours realize their dream of building a home on their own land. We hate having to turn a family away. But, we also will not build a home when we don't think it's the right thing to do for the longevity of the home. When discussing your specific situation with our engineering firm, they advised us they did not recommend building where you wanted to place your home. We agreed with them that building on top of a former pond that was filled with 12 feet of dirt with no documentation of how it was filled, the material used or amount of compaction was too much of a risk to guarantee a solid foundation. Yes, we could have proceeded with a soil test, but didn't feel right charging you for those tests when we did not expect a good outcome. We're happy for you that you were able to find someone willing to build there and wish you luck in your new home.

The structure of the home is done excellent, in my opinion. The people were very friendly that we dealt with. Most of the building process was wonderful! I think the standard cabinets that Tilson offers are made of poor quality - or at least the ones we received are. We have been in our house for over a month now and we are still waiting on cabinet doors to be changed out. Very disappointed that we will have family over for a second holiday and they get to see that we are still waiting! Sub contractors that Tilson uses for example, the painters in my opinion did a substandard job. Attention to detail IS NOT there strong suit. In the pre planning phase some members of the Angleton office were unable to foresee issues that could have been avoided that cost us extra money in material that was never used. These members lack the building experience necessary to help first time home builders like us. Building material that was purchased for our house were taken by contractors to other unknown job locations and was never returned or replaced. In my opinion, that is theft! I don’t know if I would ever use Tilson again if we ever built again. You can contact me with your questions or concerns....

    Response from the owner

We're sorry for the frustrations you're experienced with your new home and are working with you to make it right. We received the replacement cabinets for your home and should be changing them out this week. We also know the original paint job was not up to our standards but believe this was all corrected by closing. Please let us know if this is not the case so we can have it corrected. We're also sorry for the confusion about the extra building materials. You only paid for the amount of materials needed for your home. Sometimes we also have extra material on hand at the site in case we need it. Once we've used what is needed for your home, we then either return the extras or move it to another job site for use there. This reduces overall waste as well as construction costs.
