Redcliffe Plantation State Historic Site Reviews

We enjoyed our tour and history lessons with Ranger Brandon. He eloquently delivered a wealth of information about the plantation and the families that lived and worked there for more than 100 years. The tour is primarily focused on the house, slave quarters and the people and relationships of the ones that inhabited them. Some of the stories are jaw dropping. We walked the entire grounds including the trail through the woods, magnolia alley, stables and visited the store. They have a nice assortment of souvenirs.

Greatly enjoyed this tour! The guide was extremely knowledgeable! Beautiful place despite its history. Places like this is a national treasure we must protect them. The tour was so good I wish it was longer!

Beautiful place with lots of history. This would be a wonderful place to have family portraits done. I encourage everyone to take the tour. The guide did an excellent job at telling the story but also painting a picture with her words.

What an incredible landscape….a beautiful example a plantation preserved in history. An eloquent exhibit on the full spectrum of antebellum south.

We went on the best tour we have ever had at a historical site. Brandon packed lots of information into the two hour tour. His lecture covered many aspects of the time period, and he gave a balanced view of historical events that occurred at Redcliffe, throughout the region, and throughout the country. It was a long lecture, but we were spellbound for the whole two hours. What a great speaker! It was very informative and interesting. We highly recommend this tour.

    Response from the owner

First trip to Redcliffe and thoroughly enjoyed it. We arrived not aware of the scheduled tours at specific times. The staff was awesome and we did get to view the downstairs area and learn some of the family history of the Hammond's. Toured the grounds, the living quarters for the slaves, and the barn and stable area.

Redcliffe Plantation is a beautiful site. We drove down from Columbia to visit and tackle our Ultimate Outsider badge!

We walked the trail! It was a cold blustery day but pretty snug with the tree cover. Some benches along the way too if you need a rest. I will be going back! Good restrooms too. We didn't do the house tour this time. I did one about 20 years ago & will do another one soon!

Incredibly informative, interesting, and evenly balanced presentation of Redcliffe's history. Our tour guide Ranger Brandon was absolutely spectacular. We were blown away by his historical knowledge and articulate accounting of Redcliffe's history spanning several generations. We could not recommend the guided tour enough.

The ranger at the park was very friendly and informative. We enjoyed speaking with him very much. The only thing at redcliffe State Park is the plantation house. Due to covid we were not able to tour the house. we did enjoy walking around the grounds which were beautiful. There were many trees to see and we enjoyed that. It would be a nice place to have a picnic.

It is a beautiful picture taking experience. Tours are not apt for those under the age of 12. The house is a true masterpiece. Make sure to download the geocaching app to find the most cool spot on the property!

I showed up between tours so didnt get to see i side the main house. It is free to walk the grounds and step into the old slave quarters and see the horses stable, site under the giant trees or admire the different vegetation. Insightful and friendly staff are present to answer all your questions! Very cool history, would recommend !

Beautiful was the first thing that came to mind! Everything is so well kept and clean! Very friendly staff that is very knowledgeable about everything. If your ever in the area you should stop by. By taking the tour you learn things that you can't find on the internet! The stories send you back in time and you can in vision how slaves and there owners lived. We had a great time here and will deffiently revisit! The only thing you have to pay for is the tour but it is well worth the $7.50. Everything else is free!

A gorgeous historic site , magnolias and picky pear catus were in bloom. The park ranger was a very sweet, helpful, and friendly guy. I definitely recommend and stop to read the original handwritten reward, punishments, clothing, etc.

We arrived on a Tuesday, normally they don't run tours on Tuesday but they decided with the extra people traffic on the Eclipse weekend and week they would run. The maintenance man gave a small group a tour of the 1st floor. They were doing maintenance on the second floor and he had to mow another 20 acres. He was a great guide and the place is very well kept. Not far from Augusta and worth a trip.

    Response from the owner

So glad you stopped by and thanks for the review!

It's hard to rate or "like" a place that was part of a dark period of our country's history. With this said I decided to visit this historic plantation in Beach Island, SC which was a few minutes away from my campground. I'd never been to a plantation in my life but thought I'd objectively visit the grounds. It's free to wander around the house however there is an admittance fee if you want to tour the home. Tours are only available on certain days, I didn't tour the inside of the home but was able to walk up and around the porch area on my visit. The views and grounds are pretty and well maintained but beware of red ant hills. There is free parking available, a visitor center and some open exhibits in the old barn and slaves quarters. It hard walking around and not feeling disturbed by the injustice of that period in time.

Beautiful place with some interesting history. We happened to go on an activity day and they had some great stuff for kids (ice cream, scavenger hunt, games, etc.) We barely missed the 11am tour of the plantation house but we'd love to go back and experience more. The staff are very friendly and the grounds are kept up very nicely.

Built in 1859, lovely historic home. We happened to be there when a guided tour of the first floor was available. Lovely grounds. Amazing grove of magnolia trees.

Off the beaten path, on a dirt road, this historical plantation is close to original status. Nice informative guide and reasonably priced tour of the plantation main house & antiques scattered throughout the home. Other buildings still standing are the horse stables, and former slave quarters. Visitor center, with small gift shop, displays, & restrooms, is separate from the home.

This place was so touching and amazing. I was so impressed with how they have retained documents, handwritten ledgers and letters, and the history of the plantation, the family and the slaves. The slave family generations that stayed on after emancipation as laborers for decades was very fascinating. I was saddened and had a heavy heart as I saw the ledger with slave names and their dollar values listed. It is so amazing to see how they considered other human beings as property, not people. I can't fathom how another human can be seen as property. It is so good that they have preserved this type of history for the education of future generations. We can never allow this history to repeat itself. Amazing place!

    Response from the owner

Thank you for visiting Redcliffe. We are fortunate to have the level of documentation that is available to help tell the history of the people who lived at the site. Hope to see you in the future!

We absolutely loved this state park and I think it doesn't get enough recognition. We didn't know about the guided tour so didn't get to go in the mansion, but we will be back! You MUST do the geocache here!

The Ranger tour is what made the visit to the plantation interesting. We just stopped by as we were returning home from a short vacation to Augusta. We were able to get a short tour inside the house that worked out great for us. Loved learning about the history.

Ok. Did not have home open and had all shades pulled down so one could not even look into windows. The stamp was hidden also which was frustrating. Then we had to wait until the person finished cleaning the rr in order for him to use the other hidden stamp in the office. Very different from ALL the other 46 parks. Should have had the stamp on the sign as all others are as a standard.

Absolutely beautiful. We went during the virus, so touring the house was closed, but we still loved walking the grounds. The stables were interesting but I really appreciated the slave house. The historical documents brought it to life. It was a great spot to stop and reflect on such a horrible part of our history. We walked around the house and marveled at the windows and porch. It's in such great care and such a beautiful spot.

It was absolutely gorgeous, everywhere I looked I wanted to take pictures. Everything was well kept including the walking trail and every scenic place to stop for a picnic or just to enjoy the view, which there are plenty of. If you want a beautiful day out and don't mind a little walking than I would definitely recommend checking Redcliffe Plantation out.

Redcliff Plantation and Ranger Brandon deliver. The tour was honest about the heritage of the plantation, the dichotomy of its owners and the enslaved histories, all while being empathetic, conversational and compassionate. We took our time through the enslaved quarters, the house and discussed significant milestones. It was a humbling experience.

Beautiful historic site with very knowledgeable guides. Be aware that the house is not handicap accessible and does not have modern convinces like air conditioning. Great office with historical information and gift shop. Beautiful place to visit and learn about the antebellum southern plantations! You could easily spend several hours taking in the entire house and grounds. Picnic benches are a great place to enjoy lunch after your tour.

As always, it was beautiful. But the grass is fairly high which makes it more difficult to walk to the trail at the back of the field in front of the house.

This is an excellent tour of a plantation home. Jordan did an outstanding job of explaining the grounds, the lineage and slavery situation at this historic location. Be sure to visit the gift shop that help explains the family.
