Michigan First Credit Union Reviews
P
This is a great credit union. When every other bank was FORCING you to wear a mask (that don’t work), Michigan first didn’t buy into the hysteria and never forced anyone to wear a mask and I love my freedoms and rights. They offer way more ATMs and coin machines than any other bank around. Very friendly staff and great environment! A+++

This used to be a good credit union they used to take care of their members. Over the last few years they have added even more fees and less perk points. There are fees that were not there before, I shouldn't be charged for using my money

Michigan first used to care about customer service but it doesn’t seem like that is a priority anymore. My last few interactions with them have been horrible. Been banking with them over 10 years and have no relationship will be moving my accounts to another online bank with I just started a account with and already have been treated better. I do not recommend banking with them anymore.

Avoid this bank I've been with this bank for 8 years. I've paid off 8 loans early. I had an error on my credit rpeport because of one late payment, which was an error, and I even had actual proof to show. I spoke with the manager in the finance department they are very unprofessional. Things are not fair when it comes to their Fair Lending, it all depends on how they feel at that moment. Every loan I receive from them was a fight and this time they denied me due to my income being higher than it was last year. Not to mention I recently paid off four loans with them last month. I truly felt this was unfair so I decided to go to a different credit union for the same loan and received it within 2 days. Don't waste your time they practice unfair lending
R
Horrible financial institution! They're quick to take every penny from my account without any notice. I spoke with Lisa Herring & a few other representatives that were very rude & unkind. Also, the wait time every time I called was over an hour. This place doesn't even deserve a one star! I'll be making a report with the BBB as well!
m
Horrible financial institution.. They don’t charge account service fees, because they are a subpar with service, convenience, competency and overall experience. The home lending department will repeatedly pull your credit whenever your file times out due to their lack of completion. They generated 6 HARD INQUIRIES for 1 HELOC loan!! They are deplorable

Avoid this institution. They charge countless fees. Their late fee policy is beyond price gouging. If your loan payment is late make certain you only pay ONCE per month or you will suffer like I did getting charged a $15 late fee for EACH individual payment I made. I will NEVER do business with this place again.

We went to this local Credit Union to support our local business and we’re promptly told that we had to remove our masks. In the middle of an Omicron surge and everyone walking around unmasked! I am appalled. NEVER in the two years of the pandemic have I been instructed by any business to remove my mask. I left and will take my business elsewhere.

Branch staff are great and always pleasant however there is no relationship even as a 10 yr plus member looking to do simple tasks such as verify funds.

I have been with Michigan First for a little over two years now--I'd always had positive experiences with credit unions in the past ( great customer service, generous loan terms, low fees) but this place is worse than an actual BANK as far as the fees and the level of customer service (or lack thereof). $20 a month just for the "privilege" of having an account. $3 minimum balance fee. Mobile check deposits take forever to clear--sometimes up to a week. I got rid of 5/3 Bank because of many of the same customer service issues I'm having with Michigan First, but even 5/3 would post deposits next business day--and we're talking a couple hundred bucks, not thousands, where verification would understandably be an issue. The customer service from the call center is awful. I've had more polite, competent service at McDonald's in the hood. While the individuals at my particular branch are polite and accomodating, the call center ladies always seem to have an attitude, regardless of what the issue is. There was a time I would have told people this was a "last resort" option--for example, if you were previously unbanked or didn't qualify for a traditional account due to overdrafts or poor credit history. But in these days of online banks and fintech startups, I say ANYONE can do better than Michigan First.

I don’t like this credit union at all, I have the money now option and recently I was charged $29 for using the money now. My alert went off for that transaction. then the very next day it charged me another $29 for the same transaction. For every $500 a $29 fee was charged to me. I later found out as of 1/2021 that option has changed without notice via text or email. Every time I make a call I always find out new information that I’m unaware of. I’ve waited for a supervisor to contact me and finally, one did return my call After my 3rd attempt at my request. I had a loan transaction coming into my account and it was sent back to the lender once again without notice. I was referred to this credit union by my wife and now she is disappointed that she did. I will never refer no one to use this credit union...Huntington bank is better!!!!

Don't bother to get a mortgage here! They make up every excuse to not help you get a home ! Even using their fake excuse to be concerned about your finances. That Don't even have any problems..... Go to any institution, for a Mortgage just not them....

Gave them one star as i couldn't do no stars. Worst financial institution i ever came in contact with. From ridiculous fees, lack of customer service and their web access is garbage. First, you need to make appointment if you need to go to actual branch, branches in stores cant help with anything, then if you try to call customer service, it takes at least an hour of hold time, and they cant help with anything either so dont waste your time. Their app is one of the worst i ever came in contact with, besides viewing a balance, you cant do anything. Most frustrating place i ever banked with. Max ATM withdrawal is $400, and with no ability to go to branch, you may not able to access your money. I think its by design so they can keep you cash hostage as long as they can. Don't waste your time, plenty other options. I wish i read reviews before i made the mistake of banking here.

As others have stated about fraudulent activity on their accounts, I truly believe it is an inside job, either accounts are being sold to out side individuals by Michigan First employee's, or the employee's them selfs using the accounts for there own personal gain. I worked for a Financial Institution many years ago, and it is not uncommon. Especially during Holidays. And Michigan First needs to take accountability when investigating and the history of that customer's account.

My withdrawal slip was returned, said they tried to contact me, but my voicemail was full. It has NEVER been full. They also sent someone else's mortgage coupon & $2,000 check to me. Now they also have a sign on the door saying NO MASK PREFERRED. So I had to remove my mask & put on 1 of theirs. Their masks are in a plastic bag, with everyone sticking their hand in the same bag. The employees are not wearing masks. At this time covid numbers are extremely high & we are being advised to double mask. Hope not to have to go back there any time soon. Very dissapointed.. Had to go into the branch to activate my ATM card. On the door they now have a sign that says NO MASK PREFERRED

Words cannot describe how unprofessional their staff and customer service tele-providers are. Paired with how ridiculously petty they are with their holds and fees, yes they have (very few) perks to having an account here. But those perks are not and never could be enough to keep me as a member of this CU. I honestly cannot leave this institution fast enough. I feel like I’m owed compensation due to emotional distress from this banking institution. And don’t even get me started on the obsolete “online/mobile banking” options they offer. It’s not efficient nor effective. I informed a manager at the Lathrup Village location of this and her ONLY solution was to offer me a check book as if this isn’t the 21st century or something.. anyway, they deserve -3 stars but that isn’t an option. DO NOT BANK HERE. Their end goal is to munch up your money and leave you with little to no logical explanation.

Avoid MI 1st like the plague. They didn't even bother trying to follow up with the prior bad review I left to see if they can try to make anything right --Tells you all you need to know. Getting an auto-payment set up on my home equity loan has been a nightmare since MI 1st hasn't joined the 21st century so my PNC bank can electronically transfer funds. Then, after repeated misinformation from MI 1st on another option, they've charged me late fees they "can't" remove, and then double charging them -- whoops!

I've been with this bank for 7 years and can't get a loan for more than $2800. They claim its because I don't have the history for a higher amount...how can i have the history if you never approve me? Taking my money out as soon as possible

I have been a member with MFCU since I was 16 years old. (11 years now). This is by far the best, the fees are low, they don’t charge for every little thing, the money perks are great and easy to redeem for little fees to be reversed, or not paying for certain services. also recently I needed a DD letter for a new job, and I just got a personal hand written letter from the 365 live rep that helped me saying congrats on the new job. It’s personal touches like that that will keep me as a member for years to come.
Hi Essence, thank you so much for your positive comments about Michigan First Credit Union! We appreciate your dedicated membership.

First thing first. I believe Michigan first is the worst bank I ever bank with. They don’t really help nobody. I try to get extend on my line of credit. They denied me. I’m like how? Everything is good on my end, score is over 700 points. I been banking with this Michigan first for 10 years. Time to find a new trust worthy bank.

I can’t not stand this credit Union, DO NOT get an account here. I have had an account for 5-6 years now. I have 1 account, my wife has 1 account, and together we have a joint account. We’re CLOSING ALL 3, Monday morning and going to Advia credit Union. Advia assumed me that I would be taken care of better, they offer better rates, better credit card rewards and seem much happier to have me as a customer. Michigan first credit Union treat its employees god awful, they treat their customers even worse. Michigan first praises themselves with having “365 live” yet it takes HOURS/DAYS just to connect with someone to speak to and when you finally get ahold of someone their snobby. I have had 2 Secured loans of $500, a $4800 unsecured co-signed loan with them and I have had a $1000 secured credit card with them for 16 months. I have made every payment on time. When I went to see if they would take my secured credit card and turn it into a regular unsecured card they DENIED me. Which is fine because I went to Advia who approved me for a unsecured $3,000 credit card and Amazon who gave me a $5,000 unsecured credit card. My debit card with Michigan First Credit Union has been Stole 5 times now from people in other states. I can keep going on and on. But this credit unions is god awful. PLEASE DONT COME HERE AND WASTE YOUR TIME!

My card declined and the hold time to talk to someone after hours is beyond excessive. May as wel not even try. How embarrassing. I’m so sick of this bank.

Now it's my turn a few months later and I guess the quality, consistent, reliable customer service agents wasn't working that week I encountered the 365 live call center customer service. So I arrive at Michigan First Credit Union, the reception told me I had to call first so I called from my phone while in the lobby ( I didn't know you had to call first, this process is set up like a secret or something) anyway I spoke with the first lady who was very courteous she asked how she could help I explained I needed another debit card she said let me see if a manager is available to help you. I explained to her I was in the lobby. She put me on hold came back and stated it would take 15mins before a manager could come and help me and it would be a fee of 12 dollars. I didn't have it in my account, I told her I get paid tomorrow can you still help me today by getting me a card since I'm here and just take the funds tomorrow (since me and my husband bank with them) she said no we can't, I said okay I will come back tomorrow. Well things happen and I couldn't make it back up there until the following week 3/7/19. Now my husband informed me I had been charged $12 by Michigan First Credit Union and I was like why. So I was like I will ask why they charged me when I never went back up there???? So when talking to Brook the second agent on the 365 live customer service line she was very rude talking fast and trying to rush me of the line and talking over me when I asked why I was charged. She stated we can't help you, you have to call for an appointment unlike the first lady who kindly said let me see if someone is available. Now mind you they already charged me and now they can't help me without an appointment😑 so now I'm getting perturbed and informed Brook this is not what the last customer service agent told me just last week(as far as trying to help me). Brooke was acting like I couldn't get any help. I said so I'm calling now and I was here before and was getting help so what's the difference I've already paid I can't get my card and why would she charge me for a card and I never came back. Brook said the other agent put in her notes she was sending me out a card in the mail and we could pull the call to see what really happened.I said not necessary I just want my card. Then Brook says your card has already been shipped out. Now I failed to mention I asked Brook this in the beginning of the conversation and she was so busy telling me about the service I couldn't get she did answer my question then. Brook is talking so fast at this point trying to get me off her line. I said what you can do is get your manager and ask if they can help me and I will decide if I want to wait or not for the appointment time basically....smh. So Brook put me on hold and I'm sure told her manager something to her benefit because Brook comes back on the line and says my manager said that they are too busy and will not be able to help me. But they could cancel the card and I could pay another 12 dollars right then....🙄 (maybe this was the help my bad) how Ridiculous...I said that makes no sense, I will just wait on the card to come in the mail. I just wanted to get off her line but not before I told her how disappointed I was in there customer service for Michigan First Credit Union 365 live call center.
