Huntington Beach Credit Union Reviews

I was looking for a trustworthy institution to deposit a large some of money and eventually get a loan for an automobile. Since I had no experience with this company I opened an account with $100 which they immediately took $15 in fees. I felt this was excessive and asked about any future fees and was assured there would be none. Four months later they took another $2. I called and the young man I spoke to said the fee would be reversed and my account credited. When I received my next statement the fee had not been reversed. I called again they said they would not reverse the fee. So I asked to speak to the manager who told me no one ever told me there would be no other fees and that she was able to review all past phone conversation to verify the prior conversation about reversing the fee which of course she says there is no record of any such phone call. So they lied to me twice and called me a liar. In less than one year they took $17 out of my initial $100 deposit. Thank goodness I have good instincts and did not commit to any large contract with these thieves. Anything to do with a Huntington Beach institution is risky at best. ACCOUNT CLOSED!!!
Huntington Beach Credit Union is a state chartered, federally insured credit union organized in 1953 by the employees of the City of Huntington Beach for the purposes of promoting thrift and savings among its members, creating a source of credit for them at rates of interest set by the board of directors who are elected by the members. As a cooperative, the credit union conducts its business for the mutual benefit and general welfare of its members with the earnings, savings, benefits, or services of the credit union being distributed to its members as patrons. As with all highly regulated financial institutions, the credit union is required to establish policies, procedures and systems that will protect the membership as a whole from loss due to various risks, including the establishment of fees to cover costs related to product offerings and item processing. Huntington Beach Credit Union fees remain the lowest among financial institutions in Orange County, Ca, having remained virtually unchanged since 2016 and were automated in December 2021 to ensure equity among members. The credit union is always happy to refund fees when a processing error occurs but members remain responsible for ensuring that 3rd party contracts authorizing ACH or other recurring payments are canceled and that sufficient funds are on deposit to avoid over-draft transfer and non-sufficient funds fees. Today the credit union serves those who live, work, worship or go to school in Huntington Beach, Ca. Required account disclosures and corresponding rate and fee schedules are available on our website and are also provided at the time an account is opened.

Notice that the good reviews are from years ago? I joined HBCECU back in 2013, when I began working for the city of HB. From then and until approx. 2019-2020 (new CEO arrival), this was such an awesome little bank. Everyone was super helpful, kind, understanding and willing to work with you. Anyone who has utilized a small bank will know what I am talking about. They didn't have the most up-to-date tech, mobile banking app or hours, but the ladies sure made up for it with their great attitudes and outstanding customer service. But then came new mgmt. New CEO brought with her the feel of a big bank and it's policies, but without any of the benefits. Fees, fees and more fees. Auto loans? Does not matter if your credit is over 800 and you have enough cash to purchase outright, good luck getting a $70K loan from them. They max out at $100K, on auto?! Not to mention that it took them over one week, and me calling three times, to get a final answer. After the new CEO and the group of kids took over, there is no benefit to banking here. If you're an employee of HB, or a relative of one, and are considering this bank, don't! I went back to SchoolsFirst and what a relief. Auto loan approved in less than 30 seconds, blank check in hand SAME DAY! I know a few other city employees who have now ditched this credit union as well.
